I am passionate about empowering individuals struggling with the various ways trauma may show up for them. Trauma responses may show up through anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, physical health concerns, and so much more. These responses can also intensify when we go through challenges and transitions in life. Trauma is not "what happened to you", it is "how what happened lives in you today". With the use of evidence-based interventions, such as EMDR, there is hope for healing and learning new behaviors that contribute to a healthier and more fulfilling life.

My passion is to provide a safe environment for my clients to find true courage and healing through storytelling. Storytelling in the counseling office helps clients engage with difficult questions, heal from the wounds identified in the answers, and formulate a plan to move forward in their journey. My goal is to help others learn to tell their stories wholeheartedly and to come alongside them as they discover where they have come from and courageously forge new paths. At times those paths include exploring how faith impacts our journey. I would be honored to join you where ever you are.

Sometimes when life gives us lemons, it can be extremely difficult to figure out what to do next with them! Sometimes making lemonade isn't always the given answer. Sometimes it's challenging to overcome certain obstacles, transitions, hardships, and whatever else life likes to throw at us. We tend to find ourselves repeating the same patterns. Sometimes we feel stuck. Unfortunately, we experience these things more times than none. When these things happen, it’s hard to remember that we don’t have to do it alone and we can ask for help.

Some of my favorite words come from Brene Brown when she said, "Empathy has no script. There is no right or wrong way to do it. It is simply listening, holding space, withholding judgement, emotionally connecting and communicating that incredibly healing message of 'You Are Not Alone.' " I am here to provide that space for you while you work to overcome trauma or significant life experiences. It takes courage and vulnerability to begin the therapy process. I consider it a privilege to hear your story and walk alongside you.

We all have our own story that needs to be told and we need to "feel" heard without judgment. Children just as adults, want to tell their story and feel & know someone is really listening. At BHCS we pride ourselves on meeting the client where they are while providing a safe and comfortable place to begin healing. We all have our rough patches in life and as Murphy's Law would have it, "life" did not come with an instruction book on how to navigate through the rough storms. Children, the same, just less experience and less knowledge; children do not act out for no reason; they just do not know how to express themselves yet.

Hello, I’m Carlyn (pronouns she/her) I believe love and belonging are at the core of who we are and how we connect with others. My experience as a mother of three has helped me understand how attachment plays an important role in how we develop. Our early attachments, trauma, and life experiences can create incredible discomfort and we learn ways to cope and survive, that are not always helpful. Some people think that going to therapy is about getting advice from someone, but our job is to help you learn to trust yourself. My goal as a therapist is to be accepting, non-judgmental, and help to create a safe space for you to grow.

Are you contemplating divorce? Do you feel like you've "tried everything" to make it work? Do you feel almost crippled by the fear of how a divorce would affect your kids? What about how you'd survive financially? Or how you would deal with the overwhelm of being a single parent? Maybe you have just gone through a divorce and these fears are your reality. Therapy with me would give you a place to properly discern whether to stay or whether to go. It would help you to make sense of these feelings and move from feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, and not enough to engaged, balanced, and whole. I help turn indecision into action.

It’s helpful to have a professional with you to figure it all out. Everyones life has purpose, meaning, and a capacity for joy. I strive to create a compassionate environment that inspires hope. Someone who had a tremendous impact on my life once told me that while we are wounded in relationships, we are also healed in relationships. This reminder has informed my approach in therapy since the day my very first client sat in front of me. It is my hope that the therapeutic relationship we build together imparts just that upon you: restoration from both the wounds which you are altogether too familiar with, as well as those which you may not know are even there. It’s my privilege to provide the space where you can feel comfortable sharing. Together, we can find hope, as it is never truly lost.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Gilbert?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
