From working with individuals, couples, and families, no two individuals/family systems are the same.
I believe that trust and rapport in a relationship are key. This is why I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental setting to allow you to discuss any struggles you may be facing, at your own pace.

I work with individuals and couples who have decided they want to do something different.
I can't do this anymore. I am tired of battling the same negative thoughts over and over. I am on a cycle of depression that leads to unhealthy coping which make me feel more shame and then the depression hits again. My relationships with my family are suffering. I feel stuck and unsure of which way to turn. Who can I trust? Can I really change?

Though I have specific training in relationship issues (such as marriage, pre-marriage, same-sex unions, parenting, infidelity, and in-law issues), I also work a great deal with individuals. I offer specific forgiveness training that has proven extremely helpful in healing grievances and resentments; and am trained in the use of EMDR. When motivated, there is no limit to the potential for improved relationships, personal fulfillment, and peace. In work with couples, I see great improvement when there is deep motivation. And it is part of my job to foster, and nurture that motivation in each partner.

John and Julia Gottman are experts in marriage and the marital relationship, having studied married couples for over 30 years.
I have had the opportunity to work as a mental health professional for over 15 years. Most of my focus in those years has been with children, youth and their families, helping both the young and their families to cope with various life situations or the affects of mental illness. I have begun to focus more on helping couples overcome obstacles that occur in their relationships, although I continue to see individuals of all ages.

Al works with those individuals or couples who are at the end of their rope. Couples Focused Counseling: Have you tried and been unsuccessful with Traditional marital or couples counseling, Self-help books, Talking to friends or family for advice, or Doing nothing at all. Is your marriage on the brink? Couples arriving at the brink is a necessary stage in every marriage or long-term relationship. That’s right, it’s not IF you get to the Brink, but what you do WHEN you get there.

I would be honored to work with individuals, couples, and families through counseling.
Life can be hard and overwhelming. It is easy to feel alone during difficult times, but I am here to walk alongside you with encouragement and support. I take a person-centered approach to counseling by exhibiting empathy and providing a non-judgmental environment. I also integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. With these approaches, we can work together through anxiety, depression, OCD, relationship concerns, grief, stress, life transitions, and more. When treating OCD and anxiety disorders, I also integrate Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) into my approach.

I have over 20 years of working with individuals, couples and families.
My greatest desire is that each of my clients learn through the process of therapy how to walk in freedom. Freedom from depression, anxiety and present and past issues. I believe that we are a product of our past but that healing begins when we explore that past and begin to write a new story, a healing narrative. It is my belief that a productive therapeuitc relationship begins by providing a safe place, free of judgement and full of grace for the process and ourselves.

Balancing responsibilities, relationships, and self-care can be so difficult. Sometimes it even feels a little hopeless. Having an adaptive relationship with yourself, with other people, and with the world around you is crucial for personal growth and emotional health. But what if you don't have a great relationship with yourself? What do you do when your Inner Critic keeps telling you you're not good enough?

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
