I'll be a collaborative partner so we can learn together, and I can teach you skills to help you respond differently to painful experiences.
I provide therapy using empirically supported treatments including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I believe emotional pain must be allowed and accepted in order to be fully felt and heard. I believe that often times, people seek therapy when their pattern of responding to pain has become overwhelming and they are unable to consistently find meaning in their lives. I work to help others accept their current experiences and emotions in order to choose to respond in a way that is no longer dictated by past narratives and/or automatic reactions.

My clients work on stress management and on healthy ways to cope with relationship barriers, grief and loss, creative/academic/work challenges, and life transitions. They enjoy a mature and licensed collaborator as they make changes in or learn to live with a difficult situation. They learn and practice skills that illuminate their choices. They identify their strengths and use them in new ways. They see how perceptions and behavior affect well-being. My clients benefit from a well-rounded experienced therapist (in my case, over 30 years), and they describe me as warm, practical, good-humored, respectful, and nonjudgmental.

I am trained and certified as a counselor, coach and educator and have extensive experience working with individuals, couples and families on issues of substance use disorder, compulsive sexual behaviors, relationship issues and wellness.
My passion for over 30 years has been to help people explore, identify and deal with problematic or out of control behaviors and the effects in their lives and in the lives of loved ones. I have always believed that these excessive behaviors have served as one way for people to regulate their moods, their neurochemistry, and to cope with anxiety and fears. In other words, to change the way they feel. I enjoy helping people learn to manage stress and anxiety in new ways. I also love helping people improve their relationship with themselves and others and to develop a deeper sense of meaning and purpose.

Over 30 years of experience in counseling couples and individuals, I use my skills and training in Imago therapy, EMDR, Brainspotting, Ericksonian Hypnosis, and Self-Relations Therapy to help you navigate changes in your life and relationships.
A quote by Milton Erickson that inspires us to view therapy as a way to manage change: "People come for therapy not to change their past but their future." - and there are so many changes these days! Managing change with creativity and insight creates new opportunities and revitalizes relationships. When experiencing change do you struggle with lack of motivation, depressive moods, self-defeating self talk, or poor self-confidence? Counseling helps you gain insight into your underlying feelings and motivations, envision new possibilities for yourself or your relationship, and clarify conflicting emotions.

With couples, it also improves communication and the ability to be nurturing to one another.
PEACE. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart." This has been a goal in my life, and one I have enjoyed sharing with my clients. These days, most of my clients seek counseling because they are having trouble sleeping, are overindulging in food or alcohol, are feeling angry and irritable, or sad and low on energy, much of the time.

Perhaps you are coming to therapy wanting to “feel better,” and have gotten stuck in the understandable patterns of trying to get rid of different distressing symptoms. And yet, as most of us who have repeatedly tried and eventually realized, these internal experiences are not easily controlled. Thus, I view therapy as actually “getting better at feeling”—whatever those internal experiences may be—in service of working through and disentangling from them. In changing your relationship with these internal experiences, as well as adjusting your responses to them, you can break out of the cycles that are no longer working for you.

I am an advanced clinician in Imago Therapy. When relationships aren't working very well or are on the brink of ending, it really feels bad; like the rug is being pulled out from under you. Often there are solvable reasons for why these things happen. I am motivated by those methods such as Imago therapy and EFT which have worked so well for so many in the past to help couples develop a high degree of safe attachment in their relationships. Something, that once they have learned how to do it, they can take with them because it is portable.

There are times in life when you may find yourself panicking, full of rage or tearful, or fighting with your partner without understanding why. Big life events such as becoming a parent, beginning and ending relationships and experiencing loss are times that can bring about many different feelings. You might be wondering how you can get through anxiety or depression, or conflict with loved ones. Negative thoughts can make the past, present and future a scary place. It won't always feel like this.

Relationships can be a source of our greatest joy and sometimes our greatest sorrows. Being in relationship with others effectively, requires that you have a positive relationship with yourself. Maybe you're feeling depressed, anxious or angry and don’t understand why. Maybe you have negative beliefs about yourself or others that affect your decisions and relationships. Maybe you’ve felt disconnected or in conflict with your significant other, friends, or family. You may be finding yourself in a pattern of having the same conflicts over and over.

I typically work with high functioning people trying to regain a sense of control over their lives. Depression, anxiety, as well as other difficulties stem from relational problems, both past and present, that when explored lead to symptom relief. This can be done in individual, group, or couples therapy.

I believe that therapy is both an experience and a relationship.
As a therapist, I work to create a safe and nurturing environment that allows for self-inquiry and for exploration of the many parts that make up our beings. Together, we can explore and build upon your existing strength and capabilities in order to cultivate greater happiness and fulfillment. We will also work to nurture and make peace with the parts of yourself that you may fear or dislike. I believe that each individual and family brings to therapy everything that they need to make change, and it is my privilege to help you discover those parts of yourself that may lie deep within.

Everyone has the potential for greatness. It's a matter of how we learn to use life's experiences, challenges and triumphs to actualize the best of who we are. In exploring our history, communication habits, relationship and behavioral patterns, we earn more power in using this for good in our lives. Between balancing responsibilities, prioritizing relationships and simply getting out of the door every morning, it is easy to forget to make time for our own well being.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
