I specialize in women's sexual health, relationship issues, anxiety, job related stress, life transitions, and the impacts of trauma, injury, and illness. I view the therapeutic relationship as a collaborative partnership and my goal is to create a supportive environment of trust and acceptance. I practice an insight-oriented and psychodynamic approach, meaning that the past informs the present and can create unconscious patterns of thought and behavior. Once we have awareness of how our experiences impact our lives, healing can begin.

I view counseling as a partnership between an individual or family and their therapist. When the theraputic relationship is strong I believe much can be accomplished. I work with individuals, adolescents and families as a partner in the process of wholeness. I believe that counseling can assist in the development of an understanding of yourself, your family and enhancing important relationships in your life.

As a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, with experience working with Individuals and couples with varying issues, I approach my work knowing each client has had unique experiences that have shaped who they are.
Seeking counseling can be difficult to do and lends itself to being vulnerable in front of someone you do not know. An initial goal of mine is building comfort between myself and the client so that they can speak about the things that they struggle with. Only when the client can feel this level of comfort and safety can the best work be done. I work to get each client from where they are when meeting for the first time, to where they ultimately want to be.

Waitlist for new clients
Since 1992 I have assisted adolescents and adults in the individual, family and couple settings, including the diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders; and supervision of social workers. My experience includes mood and behavior concerns, family conflict, marriage/parenting challenges, and spiritual concerns. I accept clients who I believe have the capacity to resolve their issues with my assistance. Some only need a few sessions, others may require longer term therapy which could last months and in some cases years, with an average of six to nine months.

The easiest way to schedule is through my website and the best contact is email. Change, although inevitable, can be difficult and feel ruthless especially when life takes a turn you don't expect. We can start feeling lost, alone and out of touch with ourselves and those around us. Each of us are vulnerable to the pain, grief and the uncertainty of the human condition. In this way, I believe we can each benefit from a safe and non-judgmental space that allows us to put our guard down and encourages us to learn, be flexible and rest more fully into the natural process of simply being ourselves and listening to our own wounds.

*I am out on maternity leave. I will reply to voicemails and emails when I return. Thanks!* Everyone experiences times in their lives where they feel overwhelmed and stuck. Those difficult periods can be the result of internal factors (such as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, negative body image, etc.), external factors (such as a loss, relationship problems, financial stress, a traumatic event, etc.) or a combination of both. My goal is to help clients get unstuck. I work with my clients to gain insight into the issues that are contributing to their struggles and address the factors that are in their control to change.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
