You may be feeling depressed, anxious, going through separation or relationship problems, struggling with gender identity, anger, sadness, grief, drinking too much, or using drugs to cope with things in your life.
At A Better You Integrated Health & Counseling, LLC, we work with children that may have academic problems (hard time focusing), discipline problems, or just find it hard to get along with their classmates or staff at school. We also work with families that may be going through a divorce, or their child’s behaviors are causing some problems at home, which is causing the family to be disconnected. We work with couples that are tired of fighting and are disconnected, who want nothing more than to learn better ways of communicating with each other.

I use Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, behavior modification, grounding techniques, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy with individuals, couples, and families.
Therapy helps work through your thoughts, emotions, perceptions, interactions and relationships in a safe supportive atmosphere. A good therapist will support and guide you to gain increased perspective and insight while also empowering you to self-assess and identify solutions/needed changes, not impress their beliefs on you. The active change agent in your journey to increased happiness and fulfillment is YOU; a good therapist just guides the way. I am happy to help whether you are adjusting to change and transition, wanting to improve or change relationships, or hoping to learn better ways to manage/cope with stress/emotions.

Life is noisy. Everyone has opinions on how you should live your life. There are so many expectations of you. Parents should do this. Your job and spouse have conditions for you. Children should treat their family a way. You are not meeting many of these expectations. You feel ashamed, angry and afraid. This is not how you want to spend your life. You would prefer to feel peace, confidence, acceptance and joy. If only you could have someone to listen to what YOU want and not try to force their views onto you. I can provide you the quiet that you need to gather your thoughts.

Trauma and Neglect Survivors - I specialize in working with survivors of childhood, generational, and neurodiverse trauma - specifically adult children of narcissistic, emotionally immature and mentally unstable parents. Through understanding, compassion, playfulness, and sharing information, I will walk with you on your healing journey. Developmental trauma is sometimes hard to see, because for those who grew up in it, it was just normal. We were taught to keep secrets, be hypervigilant, and to do and become what the people around us needed so we could survive. Those coping skills helped us survive, but now are in our way.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
