I have been a couples and family therapist since 1992, when I completed my doctorate and then did my clinical training at the Univ. of New Hampshire Marriage and Family Therapy Center. I do brief, solution-focused therapy and work primarily with couples and families. I also work with parenting issues, with teens, and with adults with depression. I offer compassionate and candid counseling and psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families of adults, ages 18 and up. I practice from an anti-racist, anti-diet culture, LGBTQIA+ affirming, inclusive, HAES perspective. I believe that finding balance in life is essential to living in joy. Psychoanalysts provide the most in-depth, long-lasting psychological treatment: two or more sessions per week for more than a year. Ideal for the person who has tried medications and brief therapies unsuccessfully. As with exercise and the violin, concentrated​ long work is required to have lifelong growth in the ability to love, work and play, as well as deal with suffering and uncertainty. We live in a world of quick fixes where the mindset of many is limited to a pill or brief therapy only if insurance pays. Individuals and couples who come to me are usually feeling frustrated and stuck in a variety of ways, and are unable to see how to move ahead. We begin by working together to find a shared understanding of their difficulties from which we chart a path toward constructive change. My listening with respect and understanding can be helpful in itself. The assistance of a trained eye can reveal patterns of behavior and emotional reactions which are self defeating for my clients. Constructive alternatives to these patterns can then be considered and practiced with my guidance.

I believe one of the most valuable experiences someone can have in their life is to be truly heard. You may find me well-suited to helping you as I'm calm, empathic and nonjudgmental -- people have told me. I treat clients who struggle with anxiety, depression and relationship problems among other difficulties. In the past few years, my skills and knowledge have been deepened in particular by discovering that our connection to others is a survival need--and a key source of difficulties. But connection can be an essential source of healing and growth.

I treat a wide variety of clinical disorders such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and personality disorders. However, I specialize in the treatment of addiction to drugs, alcohol, and sexually compulsive behaviors better known as “sex addiction.” The reason I don’t prefer that term is because it oversimplifies both the subjective experience and the symptoms. For example, overuse of pornography, or countless hours spent browsing single’s ads online doesn’t necessarily involve sex, but it can be compulsive.

If the days are starting to feel daunting or your past experiences are getting in your way, you are certainly not alone. Feeling stuck is hard and a global pandemic is not doing anyone any favors. I work best with adult individuals and couples who wish to address any of the following: anxiety; mind-body issues like IBS, chronic pain, back pain, etc; stress and trauma; relationship difficulties, life transitions, cultural differences, or spiritual issues; and depression. Therapy is individualized, determined by each client's personal needs, interests, and goals. My aim is to support and guide each person through his or her own unique journey towards greater health, wellness, wholeness, peace, satisfaction, and fulfillment. My work is guided by a holistic, mindfulness-based approach, resulting in gradual yet sustainable change.

I think most psychological issues are related to our identity--growth, change, understanding, acceptance, etc. Whether you're young or old, unconscious attitudes, habitual behaviors, and basic character traits lead to interpersonal 'success' or 'failure'. I can help you to understand these basics. It's up to you to implement the interventions.

Doing psychotherapy is a lot like playing jazz: The challenge for me as therapist is to stay in tune with the patient's own creative, self-healing process and to provide a safe container ("rhythm section"). The patient's life narratives are the "melodies" to be composed, developed, & improvised. My ideal patient is motivated to show up and do the work involved in creating/healing and to allow the therapeutic relationship to support the work. My private practice (The Androgyny Center) serves adult patients of all genders. I also do consultations with families and professionals regarding developmental issues re gender and sexual orientation.
