I am a clinical psychologist with 15 years of experience working with people struggling with relationship issues, creative blocks, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, chronic and acute illness (including cancer), and trauma. My style is pragmatic and flexible; there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to individual therapy. I listen with empathy to create a safe environment, while also providing valuable and straightforward feedback. In addition to therapy, I offer psychological evaluation services: assessment of neuro-cognitive functioning and emotional dynamics, as well as pre-adoptive parental evaluations.

Anxiety, depression and relationship issues can range from restricting to debilitating. Have you found yourself making the same mistakes in your personal and professional life? Are you stuck in an unsatisfying relationship or job, where you feel unable to move forward? Do you have a tendency to keep rehashing past mistakes? Are you feeling depressed and anxious as a result? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then psychotherapy can help you find the answers you seek and the tools you need to promote growth and change in your life because the ability to heal is within each of us.

My specialty is complex trauma, including the universal social aspects of PTSD not listed in the diagnostic criteria for couples and individuals.
Are you unconventional in ways that makes finding a therapeutic fit hard? Need tailored sessions? Hi, I'm Locke! Whether you want to use sessions as executive function coaching, silent brainspotting, or cathartic chats, I'll aim to make it possible. Rationality-valuing, polyamorous, & LGBTQ+ neurodivergents with complex trauma report the most relief working with me, but my trauma treatment through individual and couple's counseling can benefit all. Survivors, especially those who don't wish to talk about their trauma, are as accommodated as those who do. Welcome, creatives, philosophers, and insomniacs needing flexibility!

We all experience "stuckness" sometimes and feel disconnected from those we love most. Maybe you find yourself revisiting the same old territory in your mind on a loop, and find that it is hard to make a change on your own. Or maybe you have faced a moment of rupture in a close relationship, and find your world torn apart. Perhaps you are noticing unhelpful patterns in yourself or your relationships, and are now feeling ready to explore them. Or you might find yourself avoiding social situations, even though you have a sense it might help you feel better.

My approach is goal-oriented and integrated – pulling from multiple disciplines like Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Solutions Focused Therapy. While keeping the individual’s needs in mind, an intentional humanistic approach remains at the forefront. Ultimately we’re going to need to have a meaningful relationship if we’re going to create change.

While going through life, we sometimes forget to focus on ourselves. As a result, our stresses, past trauma, relationship issues, tend to catch up with us. I want to create a safe environment for individuals and couples to be able to discuss issues that may be hampering them in their daily life. I believe that the very first step to having a fulfilling life is to be able to look at your life. One of the things I always strive to do with my clients is work with them to acquire tools that can help them to not only become more self-aware but to use that self-awareness in order to make better decisions in life.

Sharing a life with someone is hard. Having an expectation that this life will somehow match what we see in movies or read in books can make anyone feel like a failure. In my practice, I do my best to help couples find ways to connect, build trust, and learn how to turn toward each other regardless of past experiences and hurts.

People seek therapy for a variety of reasons: anxiety, depression, relationship complications, sexuality issues, to name just a specific few; or it may be a combination of issues, or even for reasons one cannot immediately put a finger on -- a general sense of "just not feeling right." Regardless the reasons, you likely found this site in a search for relief and/or a better understanding of where you find yourself at this particular moment in your own story. So now comes the (sometimes) daunting task of finding someone who might offer help.

Life presents us with challenges that can interfere with health and wholeness. We each have the ability to approach and integrate these challenges, yet it is easier with support. I work with individuals and couples of all ages seeking help with: life transitions, grief, anxiety, depression, personal identity, LGBTQ, relationship concerns, and alternative lifestyles, including consensual nonmonogamy. I also work with individuals navigating demanding and competitive high-profile careers in finance, law, healthcare, and the arts. Together we will nurture resiliency, empowerment, wholeness, and well-being.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
