I have extensive experience working with individuals, families and couples.
Most of us experience challenging times in life including struggles with stress levels, regulating emotions and dealing with the relationships that surround us. It can be hard to know how to improve our lives or our relationships when all of this is going on. Many of us can greatly benefit from developing a productive therapeutic relationship to manage these issues.

Couples therapy is most effective if both spouses participate, but change is possible even if only one participates.
Gabrielle Carey, Ph.D is a licensed marriage and family therapist practicing since 1996, and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor since 2001. She favors a brief narrative approach to family therapy, but will spend more time with complicated cases. Finding someone you feel comfortable with is important when searching for a therapist. Clients say I am warm, compassionate and non-judgmental, and provide a comfortable, relaxed and safe environment. My style is down to earth, and you will find it easy to talk to me and feel understood. My clients are individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, employment or relationship problems, or various life transitions. They may feel anxious, sad, angry, frustrated, depressed or confused. Sometimes they feel overwhelmed by their feelings, relationships, or life circumstances. Managing work or school, family and friendships is often demanding and stressful.

I work with people across the broadest span of adulthood (ages 18 and up), specializing with issues typically confronted in early adulthood, such as separation conflicts, academic concerns, career dilemmas, relationship problems and other issues around identity.
I view psychotherapy as a framework for clarifying and working through problems that cause people to feel stuck, helpless or insecure about their lives. Ultimately, I consider the goal of psychotherapy as empowering others to reach aspired levels of purpose, productivity and fulfillment. I work to help others gain a fuller understanding of themselves and the reasons behind recurring habits, upsetting moods and anxieties, relational conflicts and obstacles that seem unsolvable. My clients explore alternative perspectives to their problems, make more informed choices around them, and gain a greater sense of control over their surroundings and the stressors they encounter.

I value developing a strong relationship with my clients to help them address concerns that impact their day to day lives.
There are no parent manuals. Sometimes our children present us with challenges that we are not equipped to handle. But, an objective and collaborative well-trained clinician can address these challenges that can ultimately make parenting more enjoyable. With over 30 years of experience working in schools as a teacher, special educator and clinical psychologist, I see myself as a partner in parenting. I enable parents to adopt a mindset that aligns with their child’s temperament and I offer insight into their child’s developmental needs.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
