My approach to therapy is to meet with the person, couple or family, to assess the issues and see if we can problem solve together. Former clients have described me as warm, competent, compassionate and effective as a therapist. I have been licensed as a psychologist and marriage and family therapist for more than 30 years, and have served as an expert witness as a forensic psychologist. I have been trained in mediation and worked with family businesses. My service to my profession includes being President of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and Treasurer of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. I believe we are here to help one another, and look forward to working with you.

Are you a worrier? Do your worry and anxiety seem more excessive and intense than other people you know? If you find yourself preoccupied by intrusive thoughts frequently, it might be time to learn more about the underlying process that's happening for you. Together, we can tease out the possible anxiety, codependency, depression, self esteem issues, relationship issues, trauma, or other women's issues that may be at play. We will talk about the roots of the issues and come up with an individualized plan and a set of concrete tools that you can implement immediately.

Stress, trauma, disconnection, transition, stuckness. These are extremely difficult human experiences. Yet, our societies, cultures, and learned responses often tell us to move on, hide, or push away our real experiences. Having worked in a variety of international, educational, and clinical settings, I’ve been privileged to witness how exploring one’s challenges and pain can provide meaning, healing, and growth. Grounded in both the science and personalized applications of psychology and therapy, I believe the earlier we can process and make meaning of our experiences, the more meaningful life opportunities await.

"Hello, You have taken a very positive step by deciding to seek therapy. The Outcome of your treatment depends largely on your willingness to engage in this process, which may, at times, result in considerable discomfort. I will walk by you on this journey. Let me introduce myself so that you get to know me a bit better. I am a psychotherapist currently providing Telehealth to children and adults. I also own private practice for counseling to serve people with multicultural backgrounds. Since 2006, my multicultural experience extends from serving Holocaust survivors to incarcerated clients in three different countries.

I am a Clinical Psychologist who has been in practice for 20 years. I use an integrative approach that borrows from many of the most powerful theories, including some newer innovative approaches and the ones that have been proven over decades. You should not wonder whether our work is helping - instead, it should be clear to you (and often the important people in your life) that you feel more comfortable, motivated, and content. Therapy helps people overcome challenges and find new meaning, and I am honored to help you on that path.

Feeling lost, overwhelmed, afraid, or alone? Are the waves of life crashing around you? If you or your loved ones are drowning in the suffering caused by relationship conflict, grief, depression, anxiety, trauma, problem gambling, or substance use, look no further. You are not alone and there is hope! Desperation and suffering brought me to the point of reaching out for help many years ago and soon the seas began to calm. As life came into balance and my spirit healed, guiding others out of the storm into peaceful waters became my mission.

Art Imla, LMFT 90953: I like to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help all with life's concerns and challenges. By focusing on the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, clients can empower themselves to make the changes they seek in their lives. Do you feel like you're running a marathon but don't know when or how to stop? Feeling a lot of anxiety? Or maybe some days you wake up with "the Mondays" - and it may not even be Monday.

Life is tough and we all need a place to rest. I give youth, adults and families rest by creating a warm and inviting place to share their struggles. I listen to what has or has not worked in order to identify your strengths. We collaborate on goals and create a plan to overcome any struggles so you can be successful and confident now and in the future. Each child and family brings their own story to therapy and requires me to be flexible and creative. With young children, I work to enhance the parent-child relationship through positive, warm interactions and help the parent establish appropriate and firm boundaries.

I have extensive experience in guiding people to return to their natural state of psychological health and well-being. This state of equilibrium never goes away; it only becomes obscured through our learned patterns of thinking. As a practitioner of Integrative Medicine, my approach is wellness-based rather than illness-focused. Listening to physical symptoms can be very essential to the healing process. Creating a safe comfortable space I can be your guide to mental wellness. As you re-establish healthy thinking, you can tap into your own natural wellness.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in San Diego?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
