The demands and transitions of life can take a toll on even the strongest person; it took courage to take this action and start looking for help. Whether you are dealing with anxiety or depression, seeking help during a difficult time, dealing with a challenging relationship or just wanting to make changes - counseling CAN help. Sometimes self-help just isn't enough, you don't have to struggle alone.

There are many times in our life when we do not feel or think we are cared about or understood. It can be disheartening as it feeds into our negative self-talk and impacts multiple relationships. It isn't necessarily the "fitting in" part that gets to us...it's the "who is going to accept me for me, with all of my emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and lifestyle choices?" Whether it's the people we love, the career path we chose, the trauma we have encountered, or who we have become, we are all just trying to improve our situation while still respecting who we are as individuals.

*OFFERING IN PERSON AND TELEHEALTH* Did you or someone you know experience or witness something traumatic that has weighed heavily on your mind, impacted your relationships, or kept you from reaching your full potential? Do you often find yourself thinking or saying "I don't want to burden anyone with this", "my friends/family don't understand", or "I just want to get over it"? Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, anger, relationship problems, self-esteem, or self-image issues? Have you tried to "get over it", but still struggle with the same problems? If you can relate, then it's time to work through the trauma and heal.

Are you a basically good person to whom something bad has happened? Are you looking for Relief and true answers from within? Do you want someone who truly cares, listens with understanding and empathy and doesn't rush right in to tell you how to resolve things? You deserve results based upon your efforts. Studies have shown that the two greatest predictors of therapy success are (1) a motivated client such as yourself; reaching out, and connecting and (2) an experienced therapist such as myself; licensed and in Private Practice since 1994. Throughout this time I have enjoyed seeing the strengths and best in each individual client.

As the child of a Vietnam Veteran with PTSD, I have experienced the long lasting effects of trauma and understand the impact on our heroes and their family members; including First Responders. Untreated trauma, not just Military related, can lead to depression, anxiety, addictions, unhealthy relationships, suicidal thoughts/behaviors, and so much more. Sometimes it can feel like you are alone in the darkness. I will walk with you in the darkness until you find the light again.

I'm Destiny Buescher, and I help humans heal from mental and emotional suffering. I work with preteens, teens, and adults. I help clients develop a more connected relationship with themselves and the world around them. I value authenticity, transparency, and partnership. I'll share my honest observations while respecting your knowledge and expertise about your needs. I may have a clinical background, but that does not mean I know more about you and what you have experienced. No therapist will know more about your story than you. I prefer to merge your expertise with my clinical background to partner on this journey.

I enjoy and have experience helping children, adolescents, parents, and adults as they work through life's issues. Face it, we all need more "staff" or "tribe" in our corner at different times in our lives. I believe this can be especially true for kids which is why I love play therapy.

Are you juggling endless tasks yet secretly struggling with overwhelm? My ideal client is a powerhouse. They are the ultimate perfectionist, craving validation but feeling empty inside. Behind their smile lies a world of worry, and they are tired of pretending everything's fine. They seek not just relief, but a deeper connection with themselves —inner peace and self-acceptance. They may struggle with worry and navigate life with a busy mind, focused on the past or future rather than the present moment. They express feeling drained and overwhelmed, uncertain if they are just "lazy" or burned out.

It makes perfect sense that you're exhausted. You spend much of your time thinking about what could go wrong or what others are thinking. You feel energy crashes throughout the day, your mind chatters at night, and your dreams are so vivid that it leaves you restless. It seems as though you and your partner can never see eye-to-eye, and when you're not arguing with them, you're wrestling with issues with your parents. You've spent much of your life taking care of others - walking on eggshells, afraid of judgement, constantly questioning if you're good enough - I know this because I've lived it. Now is the time to take care of YOU.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
