Many clients are in crisis and seeking assistance with a specific issue: Divorce, Grief, Addiction, Depression, Medical Diagnosis, Anxiety, or Life Transition. Therapy helps treat the turmoil that is the natural result of these issues. The skills developed during therapy help clients live full, happy and rich lives. Clients generally arrive with a specific personal crisis. I work in unison with clients to facilitate a deeper, richer, sense of identity. Each individual is held from a perspective of capability, competency, and resiliency, that bring about a sense of continuity and recognition of their authentic self.

I believe that change begins in respecting each person's life choices. I listen and reflect to help people become aware and transform negative thought patterns, and to identify and release emotional and negative thoughts that promote feeling "stuck." Testimonial "Eileen made us feel comfortable from the 1st day," I use Solution Focused Approach with couples and help them to develop clear communication and listening skills. I have developed simple yet powerful healing methods that are essential tools for stress reduction elimination of anxiety and panic episodes and healing sexual abuse/trauma.

I believe that each person has a deep wisdom inside of them, and part of my job is to help you learn and remember how to trust yourself. Supporting people to cultivate both self-awareness and self-compassion are a central focus of mine. I also feel passionate about cultivating a safe and trusted connection with clients that provides the opportunity for healing and growth. Each of us has a unique journey and I help people to feel more at home in themselves, both in times of joy and hardship. Learning to support ourselves in times of pain and suffering takes practice, and we are not meant to do it alone.

Relationship is key in this process you are exploring -- it is in our therapeutic relationship where Alchemy happens. Therapy is not only about your story - it is about you, the Storyteller (how does the story live In us? affect us and our lives?). It is my heartfelt belief that Safety in the therapeutic relationship allows for increased self-awareness, for Transformation, and ultimately, for our Truest self to emerge, to Blossom – allowing you to more easefully and naturally live free (from.... fill in the blank) and empowered. I truly believe it takes Courage for us all to genuinely live from our most authentic nature.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
