I hear and see you! I have personal experience aiding clients of all ages, but have worked extensively with teens. I have worked with clients who faced issues with depression, anxiety, self worth, relentless inner chatter, complicated relationships, transitional life stages, infertility, public speaking, the global pandemic and generational cultural expectations which differ from one's own values. What everyone does have in common is that they are looking for a better relationship with themselves and others. I understand you because of my experience and I know how to assist you in overcoming your life challenges. You are not alone.

Stephen T. Prystash, LMFT. I have been licensed to practice since 1988 and have been in private practice since licensure. Over the years I have found that people are generally programmed toward personal fulfillment (self-actualization). With this in mind, my job is to create a safe, comfortable setting where one can explore their personal story and thus grow toward their potential. The Greek philosopher, Socrates said (500 years before the birth of Christ), "the unexamined life was not worth living." In my view, it is this examination that therapy is about at a root level.

Do you feel lost in an overwhelming world? Have you followed the roadmap given to you and did all the "right" things, but still feel deeply unhappy and unfulfilled? I work with high achieving and sensitive women who are familiar with prioritizing the needs of family, career, and relationships before their own. Many clients I work with grew up in immigrant families and from an early age were emotionally abused/neglected and parentified (taking on adult responsibilities as a child). If this sounds like your bicultural childhood, as an adult, you've likely experienced burnout, resentment, isolation, anxiety, and relationship problems.

Is your life at crossroads? Are you questioning everything, including what you want to do with your life? Do you know what you actually want to do? Growing up, you, who identify as sensitive, introverted, queer, and/or part of the minority, often felt like you don’t fit in. You learned to survive…becoming what other people wanted. As an adult, you realize you aren’t living the life you wanted or don’t know what life you wanted. If you are of a minority identity and a young working professional, it is also likely no one prepared you for the transition from school to work.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
