This is too much, the constant worry, the inability to relax, and the heart pounding fear that seems to shatter your self-worth. So-called simply task of getting out of bed, completing daily task or leaving your home almost seem to paralyze you and causes an overwhelming feeling of self-doubt, low self-esteem, and feelings of failure. All you want is to feel better; but questions of whether you will be able to trust someone with your thoughts without feeling judged, are lurking.

Hi there! The decision to seek therapy can be a difficult one. Life is unpredictable and stressful at times. If you feel sad, helpless, anxious, overwhelmed, having difficulty with past trauma, self-esteem issues, a life transition, or difficulty in your personal/professional life, you don't have to go through this alone. Together we will work on ways to process and cope with what is causing distress. As a clinical therapist, I strive to make therapy a comfortable and nonjudgmental place where growth and improved functioning can begin.

The demands of life can sometimes be difficult to navigate on our own. A therapeutic environment can be a safe and supportive place to address these demands. As a psychotherapist, I work from a compassionate and practical perspective. I enjoy helping others gain insight, find their inner strength, develop healthy communication skills and learn to cope. Most people who are looking for a therapist are searching for an ally and someone who can help them get relief as soon as possible. I use a highly empathic, relationship-based approach that is focused on symptom relief.

It is common for teens and young people to struggle as they constantly experience transitions and challenges that come with the responsibility of growing older. At the same time, they are under so much pressure to hurry and have it all together, meet expectations, and fit in with their peers. Unfortunately, under all this pressure, we can lose our connection with our true selves before discovering who we really are.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
