Perhaps you or a loved one are experiencing deep grief, longing, disconnection, stress, anxiety, isolation or a sense of being misunderstood by others...or even yourself. Relationships, life transitions, the tragic death of those we love as well as other life experiences often lead us to a degree of feeling as though we have lost our footing. In these moments, we can feel lost and unable to find the support and clarity we need to find stability. This impacts our relationships with ourselves, our sense of belonging with others as well as our ability to feel connected, present and authentic in our daily lives.

Struggling with RSD? Anxiety? Overstimulation? Procrastination? Depression? Motivation? Hey, me too! Being an adult is tough and I still catch myself looking for the "adultiest" adult in the room, only to find it's me! Let's talk about it and figure out a plan together. Your therapist should respect your autonomy, ask questions instead of making assumptions, and challenge you to look deeper and make connections. Let's build up your self-esteem, help you feel better in social situations, minimize your anxiety, learn how to communicate and set boundaries, deal with past trauma, or just enjoy life!

New client appointments are limited. My first goal as a therapist is to help my clients understand what is happening to them and give them tools to make them feel better as soon as possible. I specialize in working with clients who are dealing with the Trauma of Betrayal, Unwanted Sexual Addictions, Narcissistic Abuse, Childhood Trauma and Marital Relationship Issues. I compassionately guide my clients in understanding and changing their unhealthy thinking patterns, reframing their self-limiting, shame-based beliefs and in reprocessing the trauma held in their body. I use a variety of therapeutic modalities

As the owner and clinical supervisor of Second Story Counseling, I have 10 + years of experience as a therapist. My goal is to help you examine your current narratives and develop new ones that will better serve you. While we cannot change the facts, improving the way you speak to yourself can make all the difference in the healing process. This will be a remarkable journey, but one that requires the assistance of an outsider to help you identify blind spots and gain insight. I will be with you every step of the way, providing support and teaching you how to embrace all aspects of yourself, even those that may have been ignored.

You are the author of your life story, what is the title of your next chapter? The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves hold enormous power. You may be feeling stuck, disconnected or hopeless due to mental barriers, physical challenges, stressful life changes, family conflict, unhealthy coping patterns or things that have happened in your past. Learning to find the power of your inner voice and take control of your life story can create new ways of viewing yourself and the world. This can restore peace within your mind, body and relationships with others.

I know first hand how hard it can be to reach out for help, when the world tells us the goal is to "have it all together." Therapy can be uncomfortable and difficult, but that is how change happens. I like to make the process of change less challenging for people by making therapy about making a connection with someone, and providing a safe, supportive environment. Healing is a chance to look at the story we are living in and rewrite the parts that don't fit anymore. Our lives are busy and chaotic and somewhere in all of that, we need to find time to build better versions of ourselves and healthy relationships with others.

I have experience with clients ranging from adolescence to the elderly, families and couples. My specialization is working with serious mental illness and substance abuse. I rely on compassion, empathy, and non judgment to respectfully approach complex situations. I understand that life has ebbs and flows. It can be difficult to traverse, especially when one feels alone, overwhelmed, hopeless, helpless, misunderstood, powerless, ashamed, unheard, victimized, confused, invisible, etc.

From the cradle to the grave, we are wired for connection. I view mental health challenges to be a byproduct of disconnection. No matter where you are in life, I will meet you there! I consider myself to be attachment-based, emotionally-focused, and trauma-informed. Imbalanced and unpredictable experiences in the absence of emotional safety can leave us stuck with a negative self-view, as well as feelings of inadequacy and unimportance. Rest assured, I am safe, secure, and reliable as your therapist. You can expect significant self-development and growth working with me. Therapy is a place for transformation: both doing and undoing.

Has a history of trauma or painful life experiences left you triggered, panicked, feeling constant self-doubt, high anxiety, depressed, and a sense that maybe life is pointless? How many times has your doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, or good friend uttered the words, “get EMDR”? Does your relationship have negative communication, lack of safe connection, and missing intimacy? Have you tried couples counseling in the past and yet here you are again? Empirically validated EMDR for individuals and EFT for couples are two of the tools we can work with to help you move forward to the life you want.

I believe we should be accepted and supported for being true to ourselves and living life authentically. I spent many years in the Midwest before moving to Arizona and pursuing my dream job as a therapist. I enjoy building relationships with people who are new to therapy and may have never spoken about their struggles. Based on my life experience, I can relate to an array of circumstances. I strive to connect with my clients as they grow and heal from their trauma. My style is open, authentic, empathetic and direct. I look forward to being your biggest cheerleader.

Sometimes in life we are met with unexpected challenges or experiences that have a tendency to shift the foundations that we previously have known. Our past is important to help us restore our values. Together it is my hope, we can begin to reframe the groundwork for growth and unleashing the strength that exists from the past and freedom to reach beyond. I am a compassionate, empathetic clinical social worker who cares for the well-being of her clients. As a social worker my approach has its foundations in strength based and empowerment models.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
