During difficult moments, when stress and overwhelming emotions seem to consume us, therapy serves as a valuable resource. It helps alleviate the pressure, soothe emotional distress, and carve out internal space to navigate these challenging experiences. Within the compassionate confines of therapy, these difficulties can be transformed into opportunities for personal growth, heightened self-awareness, acceptance, and a deeper sense of purpose. As a result, everyday life becomes more manageable, fulfilling, and harmonious.

Accepting new clients In Person and via Telehealth! Are you finding yourself numbing out, lashing out, struggling in relationships, or feeling overwhelmed? I feel that the client for me is someone who is currently working on his/her inner awareness and how this then affects his/her life externally. This can be calmly working on life issues or the anxiety that can come when faced with existential issues of mortality (their own or a loved one's), such as with terminal illnesses or the important issue of "Who am I"?

Your life journey as a gay person is full of unique joys and challenges. Most of us never learned how to be gay (and happy). I get it. But know this: you can create the life you want. You can find your chosen family, heal the past, overcome shame find your passion and learn to finally love yourself at any age. And you don't have to trek up this mountain alone. As a gay counselor, my passion is helping fellow gay people develop their own toolkits to overcome anxiety, heal and thrive. As a gay man I've tackled similar mountains in my life using Cognitive Behavior Therapy and tools that work. If you are ready, I'd be honored to help.

I am currently accepting new clients and offer early morning sessions! We all go through periods in our lives in which our goals seem out of reach. Turbulent life transitions, anxiety, and depression can leave us feeling immobilized and discouraged. These experiences can also be invitations to dig deeper, to let go of limiting beliefs and habits, and to summon what truly produces contentment, connection, and joy. My goal as a therapist is to support each client on their own unique journey toward thriving.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
