I specialize in trauma, domestic abuse and addiction. I also help clients that struggle with depression, anxiety, relational issues and interpersonal struggles. I use a comprehensive, integrative approach to healing (EMDR) as well as CBT, DBT and Mindful practices.EMDR is a systematic process of healing that promotes emotional stability by helping to free the mind from past thoughts, memories and behaviors that are present in daily life. The mindful approach to emotional healing works through conscious change in perspective. Being consciously aware of unconscious thoughts helps in the process of change. This mindful practice changes how you view yourself and the world around you.

Everyone needs help at times, and that’s okay. I have several years experience working with individuals dealing with chronic anxiety, chronic depression, complex trauma, and issues related to neurodiversity. I’ve worked with girls at the end of high school transitioning to college, as well as adults of multiple genders. I also have many years working with children in different settings, many of whom dealt with multiple diagnoses. Some of these issues include ADHD, OCD, autism, depression, anxiety, and trauma.

I fell in love with working with couples early in my career and I also have a deep compassion for those suffering from trauma. Often relationship issues and trauma coincide and both need to be addressed. I view all issues, including relationship issues, from a trauma informed lens. I work with couples to develop relationship skills from researched and scientifically proven tools. I will help you practice these application based tools in therapy so you can strengthen your relationship and be successful at home. Individuals will find that I help them process trauma in a way that is effective and above all, makes them feel safe.

I help couples and families in distress with the obstacles they are facing, issues like betrayal or trauma, or difficulties with communication, parenting, sex or other challenges. My aim is to support clients in building stronger and more fulfilling relationships by using evidence-based practices, Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method. My approach is encouraging, affirming, and non-judgmental. I believe everyone deserves to be heard and supported throughout their journey towards healing and growth.

Let me help you explore and heal experiences that disrupt functioning in your daily life now. Working with kids in the foster care system I saw a continual theme. Their symptoms were about what had happened to them not their diagnosis. This drove me to explore trauma informed modalities and provide treatment for all ages who have experienced trauma. Exploring what happened as a reason behind actions and responses. I treat all ages but I have a dedicated play therapy space. Play is how kids communicate. I use an attachment focused lens. Clients most often have the solution that works for them but just need guidance to access it.

Why do you want me as your counselor? Because I believe what human intuition teaches us - that when you feel connected, heard, and valued then you find the strength to live your fullest life and make the changes necessary to achieve your goals. I am the luckiest counselor in the world because I get to wake up each day and do what I was born to do - to connect with people. This helps my clients to discover what they stand for and what gives them meaning in life.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
