I use evidence-based approaches such as CBT, DBT, ACT, ERT, Compassion Focused Therapy and Somatic psychotherapy to integrate the mind and body.
Life's bright spots waxes and wanes, especially if you who have felt invalidated throughout your life and may come from historically marginalized backgrounds. Perhaps your suffering has led to a piqued interest in a commitment to healing and working through life's challenges. My mission is to honor your humanity and work with you if you felt unsafe to be you. and you have one or more marginalized identities. I work with BIPOC and LGBTQA+ people, acculturative stress survivors, people with underlying and chronic medical conditions, and people outside of mainstream faiths.

Hi! My name is Antonia Ciunci. I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor practicing in New York City. I’m passionate about working with young adults who desire a sense of purpose and fulfillment in their lives. Many of my clients struggle with limiting beliefs, such as perfectionism, fear of failure, people-pleasing, and negative self-talk, that keep them from being their best self. I help guide them by encouraging deep reflection and intentional action to make small but important changes in their lives. I utilize a holistic approach that draws mostly from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, ACT, and life coaching.

If you think you think too much, you are correct. You have over six thousand thoughts each day. If you hang onto your brain’s every word, then you may also feel like you feel too much. Human beings are creatures of habit. We tend to go back again and again to the coping skills that keep us going, no matter how they make us feel. Sometimes, it takes a few tries to shake up an old pattern and change how we experience our lives. That’s where therapy comes in. We can work side-by-side to identify the changes you want to make in your life, create a plan, and use research-supported methods to follow through.

I believe that understanding ourselves and how we've been impacted by life experiences is essential for personal growth. Through self-exploration, clients can identify behavior patterns and life perspectives that no longer meet their needs. Clients will be empowered to develop approaches to obstacles that allow them to connect to their strengths. In my practice I integrate: EMDR, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavior therapy, internal family systems and mindfulness work.

Sometimes on this journey of life, we get in our own way and aren't ready to change until things get hairy! This can translate into a mindset or habit that no longer serves us. Does it seem like no matter how hard you try, there's a feeling of doom and gloom? Maybe you excel in one area of life but feel like you're far behind in another. Maybe there are personal goals that seem unobtainable due to feeling stuck. I have helped Clients get to the other side of the progress they want to see. Whether you're in the pre-contemplative or the action phase of change, I provide guidance and support while holding you accountable to your goals.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
