My style is warm, gentle, and nonjudgmental. I mostly practice in a psychodynamic psychotherapy frame. This means that we will use our unique therapeutic relationship to learn about patterns of managing feelings and relationships that likely helped you in your early environment, but may be getting in your way today. With greater awareness of these patterns, we can further make use of our relationship as a safe opportunity for you to test out new ways of managing emotions and relating to people. We also have the option of judicious use of medication to address symptoms that may be impeding your life and relationships, if desired.
In addition to addressing internal and interpersonal dynamics, I find it vital to explore how systemic oppressive forces including racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and capitalism affect you as an individual. The effects of oppression are often debilitating and cannot be ignored in understanding and improving one's emotional health.
Please note that I do not provide medication management as a sole modality of treatment. I require that anyone seeking medication management be in psychotherapy either with me or another therapist with whom I can consult. This reflects my views on the limitations of psychiatric medications, and the value of psychotherapy as the primary treatment.
