In addition to individual work, I facilitate psychodrama groups and women's retreats. What if the stories you have heard or told about yourself could be reimagined? As a creative psychotherapist, I help folks struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, self-doubt, and the demands of perfectionism to identify narratives that no longer serve them and seek out new and hopeful perspectives. I support my clients in seeking authentic expression and in processing relationships. Regardless of the stories you hold, either from family or society, you are deserving of peace and happiness.

We have an inbuilt propensity towards self-actualization and the job of the therapist is to help identify and remove obstacles, with the rest following from the innate tendency to grow. I use humanist and cognitive-behavioral frameworks to help individuals take action to reduce stress and pain in their lives. DBT and CBT approaches to treatment can help people develop mindfulness and interpersonal skills that support the ability to focus, manage stress, regulate emotions, and identify underlying beliefs that perpetuate problematic patterns of thinking and behaving.

At times it may seem as if we're at odds with our mind. The thoughts and feelings we experience seem overwhelming. We can convince ourselves we're undeserving of contentment, love, happiness, success, acceptance, etc. Where does that come from and why is it so easy to believe? For those of us in the LGBTQIA+ community, there are added layers we need to work through, making it difficult for us to thrive. Therapy can play a meaningful role by providing a space to work through the layers, confront our hurtful thoughts and feelings, unburden ourselves of the past, and truly learn to thrive.

It is incredibly brave to be here, right now, taking this next step in your journey. Wherever you are and however you feel, it is exactly where you are meant to be. Everyone deserves a safe space, a chance to expand their understanding of themselves, and their own timeline to heal - no matter what that looks like. In my work, I aim to create a warm, encouraging, and collaborative relationship with clients - where we can work together as a team. I believe in empowering my clients to expand upon their strengths, while also acting as a supportive figure in helping them to widen their perspectives on patterns of thoughts and behaviors.

It takes courage to ask for help when you are no longer able to manage problems or cope with distress on your own. In this moment you are taking an important step toward resolving these issues. Finding a therapist who is a good fit for you is crucial. I approach treatment primarily using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). However, because humans are beautifully complex and uniquely individual, I understand the importance of tailoring treatment to meet your specific needs, often incorporating techniques from other evidence-based treatments. For additional information regarding my background go to: www.UnionSquarePractice.com/about-us

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists

How does cognitive processing therapy work?

A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?

CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?

A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
