I seek to provide a holistic, systemic, therapeutic experience by creatively utilizing evidence-based orientations like CBT, Internal Family Systems, Play therapy, DBT, Gottman and EFT.
We are wired to seek a life of connection, purpose and meaning. Our unique life experiences, deeply impact the way we view the world, ourselves and others. At times, we feel lonely, disconnected, and lost in our search for acceptance, growth and authenticity. I believe that therapy is a path towards reconnection with your true self and others. I strive to create a safe, compassionate space where you can explore perceptions and beliefs, deepen your self-awareness, and recognize the profound connection between body and mind.

I utilize an integrative approach, pulling from modalities such as CBT, DBT, Relational Therapy, and Attachment-Based Therapy.
Do you find that there are unhelpful patterns in your life that you keep repeating? Maybe it's multiple unhealthy relationships, or self-sabotaging behaviors. Do you struggle with an unrelenting inner critic that makes every perceived failure feel catastrophic? Perhaps you're in the midst of a big change or transition in your life and you're struggling to adjust. You're most likely looking for a therapist who is warm and compassionate, who understands your specific struggle, and is able to help you make sense of the swarm of thoughts circling in your head.

I work from a person-centered perspective while drawing from cognitive-behavioral therapy, as well as motivational interviewing and mindfulness techniques.
My counseling philosophy is rooted in the belief that the client is the expert in their own life and that each person has an innate ability to grow and change. Therapy is a process that can help you identify unresolved issues that impact your access to that ability. Before beginning my time as a counselor I worked with individuals and families as a teacher, and by serving on the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board and the Los Alamos New Mexico Board of Education. Through that work, I saw the impact that empathy and mental health professionals can make in the lives of individuals, families and communities.

Life – with all its beauty – is filled with adversity. Struggles may be opportunities for growth and development. Without hardship our capacity to reach our full potential is limited. I encourage clients to look inward, recognize their emotions, and explore their current thought and behavior patterns. My goal is to help clients clarify their values, shift their thinking in a self-compassionate way, and practice new behaviors. My approach includes a blend of cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing techniques, an experiential creative process (e.g., art, play, sand play), and when appropriate, an existential approach.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
