My approach to therapy is informed by training and experience in traditional dynamic psychotherapy, CBT, attachment theory, executive function coaching and mindfulness techniques.
Are you feeling overwhelmed or unsatisfied at home, school, work, or in an important relationship? Is your child struggling socially or academically? I provide a warm, professional, and respectful environment where we will explore the concerns that brought you to therapy. We will work together to develop a coherent narrative of what is working and not working in your life, and draw on my experience and training to cultivate the insights, tools, and resources to create positive change. My website is www.johnnesbittlicsw.com

My name is Rex L. Bunnell, a master's level licensed alcohol and drug counselor at Wallastook Counseling. I have over 25 years of experience working in the addictions field. I not only understand the entire process of how recovery unfolds, but I also have a personal connection with recovery. Our first meeting gives the client and clinician an opportunity to develop a therapeutic alliance and presents the client with an opportunity to explore what his needs and goals are in counseling. Issues such as isolation, relationship conflicts, emotional dysregulation, and cognitive distortions all lead to alcohol and drug abuse.

I primarily use EMDR in addition to other evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and Motivational interviewing.
Scary, upsetting or highly stressful things that happen to us can leave behind a lasting impression that can lead to problematic thoughts, behaviors and beliefs. You can feel stuck, trapped in the past or worried about what the future will hold. I love helping people to adapt their thinking so they can leave upsetting experiences in the past, enjoy their present and look forward to the future. This work can sound daunting, but I will meet you where you’re at, go at your speed, and work to build a strong connection based on respect and understanding.

I have a plethora of experience working with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, and stress utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Solution-focused therapy, and Mindfulness techniques.
I am currently accepting new clients! Email is always ideal for communication. Currently I am only meeting individuals remotely at this time. We all struggle for short or long periods of time in our lives; however, everyone has the ability to learn new skills to overcome and succeed no matter the circumstances. Each and every person deserves the right to pursue their happiness and at times we all need a little help along the way. I allow for a serene, reflective, non-judgmental atmosphere.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
