My theoretical leanings are toward a combination of psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral concepts and techniques which recognizes the importance of understanding and action.
I am a clinical psychologist with 40 years experience in the practice and teaching of psychotherapy. I have been on the faculties of Wayne State University, University of Texas Medical School and Baylor College of Medicine. My treatment philosophy emphasizes enhanced self-understanding and better modes of problem-solving and effective dealing with life situations. The interfering effects of anxiety, depression, self-disparagement and self esteem problems receive particular therapeutic attention. I also provide stress management techniques to individuals and groups, and treat workplace issues and career conflicts. I am particularly interested in providing clinical services to individuals and couples who are coping with ongoing cardiac illnesses.

My training provided me with a strong foundation in Family Systems Theory as well as Psychodynamic, Existential, Object Relations, and Cognitive Behavioral Theories.
The quality of one's life can be greatly enriched through the personal growth and healing that takes place in psychotherapy. As human beings, we cannot control all the things that happen to us in life, but with help, we often can find ways to bring some positive meaning to unfortunate events. I believe that many of the solutions to our problems lie within us, so I work with clients to help them unlock their own unique strengths and overcome obstacles to resolution.

There are times in our lives when we all need special support. It may be due to a crisis--a major loss, a critical incident, a communication breakdown. Or, it may be more an experience in our everyday life--too much stress, a loss of focus or direction, a sense of being unfulfilled. No matter if the cause is extraordinary or ordinary, the result is that we sense that we have tapped out our own resources. It is time to reach out and find someone who has the insight and experience to offer guidance and support.

Therapy? It is difficult to make the decision to enter into therapy but even more important to find a therapist in which you feel comfortable. Understanding these feelings of others have allowed me to be in practice for over fifteen years. Making the first step to call can be a difficult process and I pride myself in empathizing with this difficulty. I have made it part of my practice serving children, adolescents, and adults to take the time to relate to each individual on an individual basis and attempt to make each client to feel comfortable making this difficult step.

Life is tough. No doubt about it. Sometimes its downright overwhelming. In these times it is especially beneficial to have someone to help you as you wade through it all. People come to counseling for a variety of reasons. Probably most people who voluntarily come to counseling are looking for some healing, and the hope of moving forward with their life. How about you? Do you want to get your "heart" back? Make some changes? Move forward with your life? That's good. I'd like to help you with that.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
