I help people sort through parts of life that feel 'stuck' and work to identify skills to move forward. In particular, my work has focused on helping people improve their relationships with food, their bodies, and the culture that has dictated the most harmful elements of this relationship. I have training in both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral modalities, and my practice leans into values-driven Acceptance and Commitment therapy. I welcome clients from all identities, and make space to address the impact of explicit and internalized biases.

I am a trained Psychoanalyst and Cognitive Behavioral Therapist with 18 years of experience.
In my many years of advanced study and clinical work I have developed a practical, solution-oriented approach to mental health treatment. I believe that no one treatment model or therapeutic approach works for everyone. My extensive experience and rigorous training have enabled me to integrate numerous approaches to tailor treatments to the needs of each client's unique experiences and circumstances. I blend numerous therapeutic models and approaches- or stick to just one- depending on the person I am working with and the goals they have for our work together.

Change and healing evolves through our therapeutic human connection, and uncovering the unique capabilities, humanness, and “best self” that resides in the client, utilizing the exploratory, emotive approach of AEDP and the mindfulness tools of DBT and CBT.
Congratulations on taking this step in seeking help and support for yourself or your family. I work with children and adolescents, families, men, and women. My 20-plus years of clinical work with children and families is built on an attachment-oriented foundation and is informed by my personal experience as an adoptive parent and training in relevant play and family therapies. Regardless of a child’s emotional/behavioral presentation or attachment (RAD) history, I view parents as partners in their child’s therapeutic process and support and guide them, in parent sessions and/or in family sessions with their child.

I use an eclectic variety of evidence-based approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), harm reduction, and trauma informed care.
Therapy works best when clients feel safe to discuss their feelings and doubts without fear of shaming, or rejection. I work to create an environment of openness, curiosity, and warmth which engenders growth and progress. My typical client is a self-critical, high functioning professional with issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction and substance misuse, and relationship difficulties. Many clients feel frustrated because they typically think through problems and work harder to progress. However, these problems typically respond to different tactics, which we explore in our sessions.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
