As an Associate Faculty Professor, Doctor of Counseling and Registered Play Therapist, I offer a compassionate and collaborative approach to helping children, adolescents, adults and families with a variety of mental health, educational and career issues. I began counseling people of all ages and issues in a variety of settings including private practice, community clinics, university career services, K-12 schools, and residential treatment over 25 years ago.

I am a Durango native, born and raised. Having lived here my whole life, I have deep roots in this community and understand the joys and struggles of living in a rural town. I have a passion for helping women, and young adults experiencing life transitions such as going to college or ending a long-term relationship, as well as, helping people heal and process traumatic events. I also help parents understand and improve their connection with their children or teens through parent coaching and am a registred Play Therapist.

My name is Amber Gottschalk, licensed addiction clinician & psychotherapist specializing in addictive behaviors, mental health disorders & exercise/nutrition. In addition, I have obtained certifications in EMDR, EMT, IV therapy, Medical Assisting & Mental Health First Aid Adult/Youth. I believe in a person-centered approach with emphasis on the here & now. Hello there! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with over ten years of experience. My main areas of specialty are treating children, trauma and parenting. I have certifications in Child Parent Psychotherapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Circle of Security Parenting. Both Child Parent Psychotherapy and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are top rated evidence based treatments for children who have experienced trauma. Trauma could include many things such as child abuse or neglect, death of a parent, witnessing domestic violence or any number of other scary events that can occur for children.

As a counselor, I often utilize a person-centered and strengths-based approach. I also frequently utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I am very passionate in guiding my clients on their journey towards living a mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically fulfilling life! I am a firm believer that all people have the skills and power within them to achieve the life they desire.
