There are so many different reasons that parents seek support for their children, and choosing a therapist is a very personal decision: Experience, philosophy, a recommendation from a friend, all go into the decision. But, usually, its just a personal connection. In the end, finding the right therapist is about making a connection that feels good and that matches your families personality. I am a hands on, goal oriented person. I will help to identify the problem, and provide the support and help needed to empower you, as the parent, to help your child.

Sometimes people seek treatment knowing what is causing them distress, for example, anxiety and depression, work stress or relationship difficulty including parenting stress. Other times people have been in traditional talk therapy and have made improvement in their lives but still feel stuck in one area or another. For chronic issues and addictive behaviors, clients benefit most from trauma based treatments, like EMDR. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the distress and symptoms associated with troubling life experiences.

My clients are primarily interested in self-empowerment. They are heartened by the opportunity to discover unconscious conditioning that might have stood in the way of their hope for happiness, success, and peace of mind. They feel revitalized when they gain new tools to reach their goals. One widespread issue that is common in therapy these days is 'poor boundaries.' Somatic Psychotherapy is a way to check in with the body to see what indication it offers us for a 'yes' or a 'no' to someone's request or expectation. A 'no' all too easily gets overridden by guilt, and always for invalid reasons. Learn how your body speaks volumes!

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with a special focus on providing therapy for adults and couples. Depression, anxiety, personality disorders, relationship conflicts, unhealthy behaviors, and identity issues are among the broad areas in which I practice. Though the reasons you are seeking therapy might fit into one of these categories, your experiences and circumstances are unique--as is the way you communicate, your personality, and your sensibilities. I consider understanding who you are as a person, your desires and challenges, to be my primary task.

Is your child or teen dealing with anxiety, OCD, or depression? Do they feel frustrated, sad, stuck, irritable, and lonely? Symptoms like poor school performance, family conflicts, weak peer ties, and physical issues (e.g., stomachaches, headaches, sleep problems) often indicate their struggle. They may battle repetitive negative thoughts, suggesting impending doom, inadequacy, or harm, causing distress. These challenges not only hurt the child but also disrupt family harmony, leaving parents heartbroken.

Clients often seek psychotherapy because something feels “off” or there are struggles as a result of family life transitions. Unexplored behavioral and emotional responses can keep us feeling “stuck” and prevent us from fulfilling relationships and careers. Each client is unique and there is no such thing as “one size, fits all” therapy. I provide both long-term and short-term support for clients facing setbacks/life changes.

Even when everything's going great, kids can be exhausting. But when your child's continually melting down or you are more often than not feeling unsure of how to parent, exhausting barely begins to describe it. Drained, depleted is more like it. You know your child is struggling with something. Whether it's from worry, family changes, friend trouble, following the rules, intense anger, big emotions, or sullenness, but you're not sure how to help. That's when it makes sense to reach out for additional support. Together, we can create a positive trajectory for long-term well-being and happiness for your family.

You want to transform and change but no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to attain your goals. This can leave you feeling stuck, tired and vulnerable. I help motivated young women, professionals and therapists go from feeling anxious, caught in a life stage, wanting to find meaningful relationships, accelerate at work and improve self-esteem, to living an empowered life where there is a roadmap for change. We work together to reduce anxiety, improve relationships, establish an empowered sense of self and develop confidence to match. I work with those who are motivated to transform their lives with a clearer vision and path.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
