I have experience in working with addiction, codependency, betrayal trauma, disordered eating, and boundary setting.
How do you explain feeling as though cannot keep yourself safe in relationships with others so you don't have any? How do you begin to even talk about your inner world, it just feels chaotic and like something is wrong with you. How do you explain conflicting parts of yourself and reconciling behavior that is not only destructive but outside of your own integrity? How can you even begin to explain your self-sabotage and attenuation? Guess what? You don't have to. I understand deeply what it is like to feel these things and to be fully human and all the messiness it entails. I would be honored to walk by you in your journey.

I work with the military community, with trauma, addiction, and other stressors that are holding you back from feeling like you are getting the most out of life. People who enjoy working with me are those looking to dig deep, talk about hard topics, be lovingly challenged from time to time, who want to live their lives with emotional freedom, and do all of this in a nonjudgmental space. My patients know that I am not interested in telling you what to do, judging, or coaching you how to live your life.

When is sadness, not just sadness? When is worry more than just your average worry? It starts small, and we tell ourselves we will put things away later. That later turns out to be a week, then two, and then a month. You find yourself not wanting to get out of bed or not wanting to leave the house. You don't have to do this alone. Let me help you understand your feelings and find your motivation. Or have you experienced the stress of fitting in after immigrating to the United States? Or have you felt panic attacks after translating documents from English to Spanish?

We can’t stop life from happening, but we can learn the tools to manage our day to day and cope with things outside of our control. I became a Marriage and Family Therapist because I wanted to help others understand what drives their responses, learn to change unhealthy thought processes, and move forward mentally and emotionally. I’m passionate about working with teenagers and young adults because I want to help them find the voice that society and old-world values took away. I also have a strong desire to help keep families together by encouraging their understanding of how the entire family system is impacted by mental illness.

I help high achievers and people-pleasers overcome feeling unappreciated and disconnected. Sometimes it feels impossible to turn your attention away from others. You wish the dread of disappointing them would just go away. The constant predicting - and the fear of someone getting angry with you - can make every day nearly impossible to navigate. You wonder how much longer you can hold back your feelings of going unappreciated until the hostility takes over.

Hi there, I'm Amy! I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist. I have worked primarily in private practice since 2015 as well as in residential treatment for recovery from addiction. I prefer working with young women 18 to 35 who would like to reduce anxiety or are experiencing complex trauma which are impacting their relationships and capacity to manage stress in work and in life who desire to feel empowered and healthy. Codependency Therapists

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
