Care and support are essential for living a full life, but support can present itself in many ways. Maybe you are seeking better coping skills, the resources to develop better boundaries or deal with conflict in a healthier way, or maybe you are simply seeking someone to listen and allow you the space to grow into the person that you want to be. I work with each client with the understanding that they have their own struggles and own way of needing support so that they can begin their journey to health and happiness. My approach is strengths-based, integrative, and inclusive.

I specialize in working with eating disorders and body image through a social justice-based, Health at Every Size lens.
Are you queer and struggling with body image and food? Or just feeling disconnected from your body? Are you looking for a therapist who gets it—who’s been there? I am an eating disorder therapist who is also queer. Believe it to not, the LGBTQ community is hit hardest when it comes to struggling with our relationship with our bodies. Many of us have had eating disorders , and even more of us struggle significantly with body image. As a trained somatic therapist, I hope to support you to have a better relationship with your body, and to understand the language it speaks—including how trauma may have manifested in your nervous system.

I am a trauma-informed, mindfulness-based counselor who works with individuals healing from trauma and eating disorders . I work with clients searching to integrate their past and make peace with their bodies so that they can become their most realized selves. I do so through listening, through validating, through sorting through the parts of our story that have been labeled as “off-limits” and thrown deep inside a closet.

If you are here, you have reached the point of exhaustion. Your anxiety, depression, and stress are starting to feel out of control. You want to be free of the high levels of responsibility you have seemingly always held. The weight you are under causes you to be irritable and anxious, which invariably affects all of your relationships. You may even fantasize about leaving it all behind and letting someone else pick up the pieces. I want you to know that there is freedom in this life for you if you are willing to take a leap of faith. Take this leap with me and, together, we will get you to the other side.

Sometimes the first step is the hardest and finding a therapist you connect with can be a vulnerable experience. I hope to use compassion, authenticity, and a little sass to help you navigate that experience. My goal is to help you find new ways to relate to the world and to enable you to embrace your experiences more fully and bravely. I bring in skills from therapies, such as ACT and DBT, to help you find your strengths and develop your resources. And I recognize that the most growth occurs in an authentic relationship which balances compassion with challenge and emphasizes social justice and intersectionality.

People seek therapy for many reasons, to make changes or process difficult experiences. My goal is to help you better understand yourself and it is essential to me that you feel heard and accepted in our work. Then we can explore together the changes you want to make in your life and how I can support you to enact those changes. You are the expert in your life and I want to help you move in a direction that feels best for you. I honor the range of identities (gender, ethnicity, sexuality, etc.) and strengths that you bring to therapy.

Hi, I’m Grace and I am here to help! I am proud of you for starting the therapy journey. I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults in all stages of life. I practice psychology from a psychodynamic lens which simply means I believe that a person’s roots and earlier life experiences impact their current functioning. While therapy goals are built on an individual’s needs, I will always maintain a focus of deeper self awareness during our time together. During sessions you can expect a variety of techniques from play, art, exploring family history, to CBT and DBT tools.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
