Many of my clients fear they will never feel better. They describe feeling lost, alone, exhausted, and confused. Life frequently feels out of control. It's hard to find satisfaction with work, relationships, and especially in themselves. Symptoms that bring them to therapy include withdrawal from loved ones, turbulent sleep patterns, depression, anxiety, mania, and thoughts of death or suicide that often make joy or excitement impossible. It's impossible to set goals, let alone actually reach them. And dreaming about the future? Many of my clients struggle to get out of bed, let alone check items off of their bucket lists.

I offer a range of specialty services that generally fall outside the typical categories and tend to use a “whole person” approach to treatment and stabilization, though over the last 10+ years of intensive couple’s and individual work I’ve treated almost everything and welcome all issues large or small, no matter the complexity. I offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy as well as Spiritual Emergence Coaching and meditation training for issues where mental health and spirituality meet. Lastly, I offer specialty testing to precisely identify problems and diagnoses, then use these to best determine what treatment will be most helpful.

Starting your personal counseling journey is never a decision of weakness, but instead it's one of great strength and bravery. You are deciding to face the issues, change the patterns, and break the unhealthy cycles in your life and in your family. That is an incredibly brave thing to do, but I do understand that it's scary to get started. My hope and desire is that you feel supported and empowered throughout this process. I hope to be able to provide tools, guidance, and support as you walk out your journey of healing. I am a Christian and will incorporate faith-based elements when it's welcomed, but that is completely up to you.

We all have the need to feel supported and understood when in crisis, or when life feels overwhelming. I don't think we are meant to navigate life's difficult paths alone. I encourage you to call and see how therapy could be of benefit to you with your current life circumstances. I believe we each have the innate capacity to heal, and I value and encourage the integration of mind, body, and spirit. I have experience treating depression, anxiety, addiction, chronic pain, childhood sexual abuse, trauma, grief, and PTSD.

You are busy, and successful in your career. You've worked hard to achieve. And -though difficult to admit - you are struggling with keeping all the balls in the air. Whether it is an acute issue, or a longstanding difficulty, you will feel my well honed skills as we navigate forward. You don't have to suffer alone anymore, or feel like you have to settle for less. When you come to me you can be assured that our focus and attention is on you and your goals. Often, the adaptive strategies we have learned as younger people, outgrow their usefulness later in life. I feel honored to accompany people drawn towards growth and change.

Life is filled with hopes and expectations that lead to our greatest joys and deepest pain. The tricky part is that the things we value the most can cause us the greatest pain and suffering. Where there is pain, there can be healing, and where there are ashes, new life can be made. Zach Linder believes that the context of the past, the experience in the present, and the hopes and goals of the future are all essential parts of using our deepest suffering to move into and live our greatest joys. Zach’s clients experience him joining them where they are and walking with them step by step on the journey to where they want to be.

I am only accepting Aetna patients at this time. My role as a therapist is to be a compassionate guide through the process of therapy. We walk together to deconstruct narratives that keep you from experiencing your worth in this world. My hope is that you leave therapy feeling seen, supported, and cared for.

We all face difficult challenges that can make it hard to face on our own. I believe in helping individuals overcome these hardships whether it be children, individuals, or couples. We can work together to create goals that help you accomplish your best self and ensure that you have the support to do so. I like to use humanistic and holistic approaches with clients that tailor to each persons specific needs and I also use trauma-informed approaches for those who have experienced trauma. I use play therapy techniques with children and provide parenting support and consultation.

Imagine you have had the same problem or behavior recycling through your life for months, perhaps years. This could be anything from managing your emotions, accepting how traumatic events have shaped your life, addiction, conflict, how other people treat you/how you treat others, or simply taking ownership. Imagine your goal is to change the circumstance, flip the script on your life and find lasting change. I want to help people who want to learn why things are the way they are and to embrace new skills and tools to manage their lives. I use a combination of practical experience and research based skills to get you there.

Counseling is provided to offer you healing, hope, and empowerment when you are experiencing emotional, relational, and mental health stress. You are guided through questions like...My life has totally changed. What do I do now? How do I repair my relationship with my best friend? Where do I turn after the death of a loved one? How do I heal from past abuse? To start addressing issues like these, I'll ask you questions in our very first session that will lead us to new ways to see your troubles or we'll pinpoint a big struggle you'd like to address. From there we'll decide on a plan for therapy specific to your goals.

After I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, I encountered the challenge of finding a therapist who understood my mental health and how my physical health was impacted by and influenced my perception of self. In addition to seeking self-care, I became aware that my health experiences deeply affected my family. While doing my academic work at Regis University and St. Louis University School of Family and Community Medicine, I have been able to develop a whole-person approach to counseling care. If you or your family are seeking help that emphasizes communication training and person-affirmative care, let me know.

Does "getting up and out the door" seem to be a daily struggle? It's 9am and your mind is "so full" with worry and racing thoughts that you can't remember where you put your car keys and you are late for work, again. Your loved one asks you why you snap at them and you wish you had an answer. Maybe memories from a painful loss or traumatic experience still haunt you, even in your sleep. Since you can't sleep maybe you drink a bit more or scroll your phone all night. You stopped going out or socializing because you feel alone even around loved ones. You just want to feel "like yourself" again but forgot what that even means.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
