I am a therapist who has been working with adolescents over the course of the last 20 years. This started when I earned my BA in Psychology at MSU. At that time, my goal was to work with teens and change the world - starting in a residential facility. After four years, I realized that my passion lied in doing becoming a therapist and attended Chapman University to earn my Masters in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling. During my educational years, I continued to work in different residential settings and then began working in outpatient settings.

Do you feel as though you are stuck in a black hole and are hanging on to the side by your fingernails, desperately trying not to be overcome by those feelings? Do you feel as though you can't relax and simply enjoy the moment? Do you feel as though no one understands you and appreciates you for who you are, rather than what you do? If so, I can help you get to a point where you can say what you think in a respectful manner and feel as though you are understood and accepted by those who matter to you. There is no magic pill that will do this. But it is an entirely do-able task.

I enjoy working with Individuals, Couples, Families and relationships in the business world both federal and civilian. I have been developing policies and procedures for dealing with court systems in areas such as domestic violence, truancy and other familial issues. My PhD is in Marriage and Family Systems. With a long standing history of helping people get to the root of what an issue or problem actually is, we can then begin the solution process. Many therapists tell you what you want to hear, but I tell you in a soft and comfortable way... what you NEED to hear.

I believe therapeutic rapport is the most important aspect of therapy. I also believe in and use acceptance, nurturing, and affirmation to guide therapy. Together, we’ll build coping skills, set meaningful goals, and create a safe, supportive, and faith-optional space where you feel heard, respected, and empowered. I work with clients who are experiencing trauma, addiction, substance use, OCD, anxiety, depression, and many other struggles; who long for clarity, healing, and direction. Many feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected.

So many of us struggle with having the courage to be ourselves and to live authentically. It’s uncomfortable, it makes us feel vulnerable, and we fear the possible consequences – What will I lose? What will I have to change? Will people judge me or not like me? It’s also really hard to hear and trust our inner knowing. There are so many things influencing our choices and we often betray ourselves by not listening to what feels true to us.

How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
