Play is the way a child communicates and processes the world around them. My goal is to offer a safe space for children to be themselves in order to work towards their therapeutic goals. I provide therapy to the child along with parenting support to their caregiver, as both are necessary for growth and healing. I recognize that no two children are alike and place value on getting to know the unique needs of each person, which allows me to adapt my work to meet clients where they are. I look forward to meeting you and beginning our journey!

My specialties in Synergetic Play Therapy, Hand in Hand Parenting , mindfulness, and relational neuroscience allow me to offer tools and a framework that supports kiddos, parents, and adults in understanding their natural states of stress/arousal so they can care for themselves and others in the midst of fear, overwhelm, hopelessness, helplessness and anger.
Thank you for taking a moment to check in with yourself and to reach out. I would love an opportunity to talk more about what is not feeling good in your life. I trust that it's that very experience of being together that allows one's own confidence to emerge and for clarity to arise even in the midst of overwhelm, anxiety, depression, anger or grief. With warmth, curiosity and patience we'll make our way toward the discomfort, cultivating confidence in your own process for healing, strength and safety, while at the same time learning tools for tending to needs, exploring boundaries, managing stress, and caring for feelings.

With very young children (ages 0-2), the work always includes the parent , who is often working through their own postpartum anxiety or depression.
School. Friendships. Play. Sleep. Family. These are the tasks of childhood. Often when our young children are struggling, we are told to wait, that they will grow out of it or that this phase will pass on its own. Unfortunately that can lead to older children who continue to struggle, only on a bigger stage. We are seeing school avoidance, irritability, isolation, and social difficulties starting at younger and younger ages.

My goal is to provide clients caring, concrete, and practical answers using proven-effective treatment options. I feel strongly that clients should be a collaborator in their treatment and see improvements quickly. Parents with children who have behavioral problems are often exhausted and at the end of their rope. Parent -Child Interaction Therapy provides quick solutions and reduces parental stress. Couples often seek therapy when communication is breaking down. Both PCIT and Gottman Method Therapy inform my work with couples and families.

Are you feeling alone or overwhelmed trying to find some sort of balance in your life? I see you, I hear you! We all have a story and need to be heard, validated, & sometimes we need help navigating those times that blindside us! Perhaps past trauma is bubbling up into current relationships? You're not alone, let's figure it out together!

If you are feeling frustrated, helpless, and overwhelmed with what to do as a parent or guardian because you have done everything you know how to help your child, give me a call.
As a Registered Play Therapist who specializes in working with children 10 and under, I believe and know that children cannot process the same way that we adults do, which is why talk therapy won't work well for them. For children, play is their language and the toys are their words (Landreth). I am trained to communicate and use their play to reach their goals ( little do the kids realize what important work they are doing!) My job is to help them realize their best selves while helping you as their parent and caregivers understand and parent them in ways that can speak not only to their strengths but yours as well.

My clients come from a variety of backgrounds, but often find themselves in the helping profession. Teachers, nurses, veterinarians, and EMTs, those who have a habit of putting others' needs before their own. My clients are often worn out, burnt out, and struggling with how to stay in their profession when they don't have energy or passion anymore. Many often feel guilty because they have a "good life" when you look from the outside and don't understand why they feel the way they do. At this time I an not working with children, however, I also love exploring parenting strategies and helping children succeed through family work

Many will enter therapy thinking, “What have I been doing wrong to get here?” I meet clients and think, “What have you been doing right to make it this far?” Yes, I think a bit backwards, but it’s what allows me to find innovative ways to help clients move forward using their strengths. Individuals, couples, and families who have previously felt stuck in complex issues with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief & loss, adoption, parenting , and relationships report finding relief through embracing their strengths and being reassured that their experience is valid. This helps tap into their innate ability to heal and renew balance.

I am trained to provide play therapy, neurofeedback, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, sexual abuse treatment and parenting support.
My name is Erin Thomas and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Northern Colorado. In therapy, every client is different and has differing needs for the healing process to occur. This is why the most important step to me in working with a client is establishing a trusting relationship at the beginning of therapy so that I can understand how to help in the most effective way. Connecting with others in a way that supports them through difficult times in their lives has been my passion and I continue to look for new ways to help those who struggle.

Do you feel as though you are parenting several children in one? Do you have an adoptive child that is struggling? Does your child: deny remembering specific events, vary in his/her abilities, rapidly change moods, steal, hoard food, lack social skills, show physical/verbal aggression, react disproportionately to specific situations? Are you confused by your child's behavior and frustrated that your current parenting skills/techniques are not effective? Are your child's teachers reporting inappropriate or disruptive behaviors at school? Would you like to gain hope, learn new skills, and see more of who your child really is?

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
