Clients benefit from a wide range of trauma modalities such as EMDR or Somatic Experiencing and evidenced based practices such as
Emotionally Focused
Therapy or the Gottman Method.
Many will enter therapy thinking, “What have I been doing wrong to get here?” I meet clients and think, “What have you been doing right to make it this far?” Yes, I think a bit backwards, but it’s what allows me to find innovative ways to help clients move forward using their strengths. Individuals, couples, and families who have previously felt stuck in complex issues with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief & loss, adoption, parenting, and relationships report finding relief through embracing their strengths and being reassured that their experience is valid. This helps tap into their innate ability to heal and renew balance.

I enjoy working with adolescents and adults and have specialized training in
Emotionally Focused
Therapy for couples.
I help people who have tried lots of things to feel better, but are still having trouble making changes. If you struggle with any of the following, I can help: feeling like your emotions overwhelm you, frequent ups and downs in your relationships, problems with anger, addictive or compulsive behavior, self-harm, feelings of hopelessness or depression, and the after-effects of trauma. These struggles do not have to be a part of your life forever. I provide compassionate and effective therapy that will help you learn new skills and launch you in the direction you want to be moving.

Accepting New Clients! I am a licensed psychologist with experience treating adults, young adults, athletes, and couples. My approach to therapy is supportive, client-centered and humanistic. I think of my role as facilitating growth, rather than dictating how one should or should not live. I work to be authentic and real with my clients and believe that trust, safety, and a positive therapeutic relationship can lead to the most meaningful changes.

They will feel safe within my calm presence and encouraged to see the light in everything with my sense of humor. Clients can overcome any fears they have around going to therapy by entering into this strong therapeutic relationship with me. I can help them better manage and eventually overcome their issues regarding self-worth, anxiety, mind/body disconnect, depression, boundary concerns, relationship concerns and much more.

Life is beautiful and it can also be very challenging. Often we know it is time for a change in our lives, but may not know how to begin that process. When we are struggling, it is easy to feel alone and isolated in our struggle, creating feelings of sadness, anxiety, frustration and hopelessness. As a Licensed Professional Counselor and Mindfulness Teacher, it is my desire and honor to encourage and support clients through the extraordinary process of change. I believe in every person's innate ability to learn new skills, adopt valuable tools and uncover unique and beneficial strengths.

I believe that growth and healing are a part of our process during this lifetime. That everything we experience molds who we are and how we see ourselves and the world. Sometimes those experiences can distort our reality and create a way of seeing things that isn’t helpful. Our current society is one that encourages people to “pick themselves up by the bootstraps” and keep moving forward without help. This just encourages us to keep this same unhelpful way of thinking. There is nothing wrong with getting support on your journey. A new perspective can be just what you need to move forward in your life in a more fulfilling way.

Life is hard. Hurt happens to all of us. Sometimes it is intentional, sometimes unintentional. When it happens, we are left with a wound that, if left unexamined, can affect every aspect of our lives: body, soul, and spirit. Lancing the wound can be painful, especially those wounds caused by trauma and abuse, but the compromised life that we live if we don't examine the wounds is often as painful as the original wound. Choosing to face the pain is a courageous act, and successful resolution requires a safe and supportive atmosphere with safe and knowledgeable professionals.

While coping with any life transition it is normal to question life, your purpose, spirituality, yourself, and others. Are you living with the death of a loved one? Are you noticing that people want you to move on, or be who you used to be? Are you navigating life with serious illness or chronic illness or are you a caregiver? Do you want to live a life that brings more joy, find your purpose, and have a sense of finding some direction again? I have experience supporting clients living with chronic or serious illness, and their loved ones.

Life can be challenging at times. Whether going through major life changes or not, these things can greatly impact our well-being. I focus mainly on adults using motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and person-centered therapy to help clients think about the issues they are facing from a different perspective. By changing the way you think, you can feel empowered to make meaningful changes in your life. I also enjoy utilizing a holistic and/or spiritual approach if that is something you would find helpful. I will work with you to develop a trusting relationship in which you feel heard and valued.

I have been a therapist since 1996, I founded Shining Through Counseling because I think everyone has a story to tell and needs support on their journey to wellness and working through past issues. Everyone's path looks different, and that is what makes us unique. Walking that path can be scary and hard. I am here to support and you and help you to heal, meet your goals and let your true self shine through, bigger and brighter. I do this by building a trusting relationship, and working together to address current and past issues or trauma, processing through them, building and strengthening coping skills and supports.

My clients are simply looking for a down to earth person with whom they feel comfortable sharing, and knows how to not only listen, but provide feedback and suggestions when appropriate. My individual and couples clients enjoy a balance of talking through current issues and developing practical skills/tools to address their specific needs. The ability to lean into and enjoy life doesn't always come natural, past experiences may have wired your brain in a way that makes it difficult! Ultimately, we are all after self-worth and congruence. This fulfillment leads to balanced, loving relationships. I will absolutely help you find this.

Emotionally Focused Therapists
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an approach to therapy that helps clients identify their emotions, learn to explore and experience them, to understand them and then to manage them. Emotionally Focused Therapy embraces the idea that emotions can be changed, first by arriving at or 'living' the maladaptive emotion (e.g. loss, fear or shame) in session, and then learning to transform it. Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples seeks to break the negative emotion cycles within relationships, emphasizing the importance of the attachment bond between couples, and how nurturing of the attachment bonds and an empathetic understanding of each others emotions can break the cycles.
