I know sometimes it feels like no one can help you. That you are too much, too dark, and too broken to be helped. Sometimes trauma can manifest by cutting, eating disorders, depression, chaos, and a real struggle to maintain friendships. It can be hard to even picture what a stable and consistent life would look like, but it's still something you want. Chaotic feelings feel like they take over you and you struggle to make it through each day. You want to live but still feel suicidal. This is all normal for someone with trauma, someone who has been through abuse , someone who has experienced broken relationships and even toxic ones.

I work with individuals who are struggling with depression, anxiety, the effects of sexual abuse and other forms of trauma, PTSD, and identity issues.
Life is hard. Hurt happens to all of us. Sometimes it is intentional, sometimes unintentional. When it happens, we are left with a wound that, if left unexamined, can affect every aspect of our lives: body, soul, and spirit. Lancing the wound can be painful, especially those wounds caused by trauma and abuse , but the compromised life that we live if we don't examine the wounds is often as painful as the original wound. Choosing to face the pain is a courageous act, and successful resolution requires a safe and supportive atmosphere with safe and knowledgeable professionals.

We all need a safe and accepting space to truly explore and feel seen in life's deepest struggles and complications. I work with all parts of you that are willing and able to show up, to better understand where big (and sometimes lonely and scary) emotions, thought patterns, and behaviors are coming from and how to move forward with these. I work with highly-motivated adults who wish to dig deep and heal. I most enjoy working with those who have been caregivers, experienced domestic violence , and/or child abuse /neglect. The majority of my training has been through the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation.

I have worked with victims of domestic violence and other forms of violence .
We all go through times of sef-doubt, depression and anxiety. Life change can amplify these. I believe all feelings are valid, because we are feeling them. What we think about them can be harmful or helpful in a situation. Being very present creates calm as we are in the situation as it happens rather than in the past or future thinking about what we did or will do. This practice strengthens relationships as well as offers personal insight and growth. My job as the therapist is to allow my clients a place to explore the space in their heads. I help clients accept and understand their emotions creating new behavior patterns.

My name is Erin Thomas and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Northern Colorado. In therapy, every client is different and has differing needs for the healing process to occur. This is why the most important step to me in working with a client is establishing a trusting relationship at the beginning of therapy so that I can understand how to help in the most effective way. Connecting with others in a way that supports them through difficult times in their lives has been my passion and I continue to look for new ways to help those who struggle.

I specialize in using art therapy and EMDR with adult survivors of childhood trauma, and have specific training in working with dissociation and sexual abuse .
I'm an Art Therapist and Transpersonal Counselor. I like to think of it as combining creative processing with soul-centered psychotherapy -- I love helping people transform through images. I counsel people who long for emotional/spiritual clarity and purpose, but feel overwhelmed by fear, shame, and grief. Through art therapy, transpersonal counseling, and EMDR, I support clients through the process of exploring neglected areas of the self, so they can find meaning and direction in their lives. EMDR is an evidence-based treatment approach which can improve self-esteem and process difficult past experience and emotions.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
