I believe that growth and healing are a part of our process during this lifetime. That everything we experience molds who we are and how we see ourselves and the world. Sometimes those experiences can distort our reality and create a way of seeing things that isn’t helpful. Our current society is one that encourages people to “pick themselves up by the bootstraps” and keep moving forward without help. This just encourages us to keep this same unhelpful way of thinking. There is nothing wrong with getting support on your journey. A new perspective can be just what you need to move forward in your life in a more fulfilling way.

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” –Maya Angelou. Sometimes life deals you a million little paper-cuts, relationships are challenging, our coping mechanisms aren’t helping, and we find ourselves disillusioned and disconnected. You may be dealing with a difficult or destructive marriage, anger and resentment, hurt from the church, relentless anxiety, unprocessed grief, feeling like you're trapped, or struggling with unspoken shadows of the past. Relational conflict feels like a never-ending cycle and you're beginning to wonder if it will ever get better.

I feel strongly that clients should be a collaborator in their treatment and see improvements quickly. Parents with children who have behavioral problems are often exhausted and at the end of their rope. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy provides quick solutions and reduces parental stress. Couples often seek therapy when communication is breaking down. Both PCIT and Gottman Method Therapy inform my work with couples and families.

I am a firm believer that we are not meant to go through our lives alone, but that often life's struggles can leave us feeling alone and isolated. Even when our well intended friends and family try to help us, sometimes there are just things that they aren't equipped to help us with; and we can end up feeling more alone and misunderstood than we did before. Whether you are grieving the death of a loved one, dealing with PTSD, depression, anxiety, divorce/break-up, co-parenting, chronic illness , or other challenging life curve-balls, I am here to walk alongside you.

We all need a safe and accepting space to truly explore and feel seen in life's deepest struggles and complications. I work with all parts of you that are willing and able to show up, to better understand where big (and sometimes lonely and scary) emotions, thought patterns, and behaviors are coming from and how to move forward with these. I work with highly-motivated adults who wish to dig deep and heal. I most enjoy working with those who have been caregivers, experienced domestic violence, and/or child abuse/neglect. The majority of my training has been through the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation.

Codependency Therapists

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
