I specialize in childhood bereavement and am skilled in working with many of the challenges children and adults face when confronted with all aspects of grief and loss .
I work with children, teens, and adults who might be experiencing overwhelming feelings and emotions, are stuck in disruptive patterns, or are feeling detached from the things that were once loved. Perhaps there has been a significant change, traumatic event or challenges at school that have made things feel different than the way they were. Sometimes you might not be sure what has changed but feel that something is just not right. Support can be helpful if you or your child are struggling with sleep concerns, physical aches and pains, behavioral changes, or an overall sense of worry or stress.

You’ve experienced a great loss or significant trauma and your world feels dark and confusing. You feel lost, overwhelmed, anxious, angry, numb, and exhausted – often all at the same time. You’re wondering who you are now and if you’ll ever feel like yourself again. I get it. I’ve experienced it. Grief and traumatic stress are messy and unruly, and they definitely don’t obey clearly defined stages or fit neatly into any timeframe. Still, as painful as this is to hear, grief is normal, natural, and necessary. And, healing from a traumatic experience is possible. You don’t have to face either alone. I’d be honored to walk with you.

My other specialty includes clients who have experienced trauma or loss in the back country.
Finding the right support can be an overwhelming and difficult task, especially when anxiety and life stressors no longer feel manageable. I welcome my clients with empathy, understanding, and compassion, as I strive to meet each person exactly where they are. I believe in a strong relational model, because although trauma can happen from relationships, we can also heal our trauma with relationships. I am passionate about people, and work with clients ages 4 and up. Although I work with a wide variety of people, I specialize in working with children, preteens, and teens.

Specialty areas I include in my practice are adolescents (such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, school and family issues), grief / loss /transitions ( death of a loved one, chronic or life threatening illness, pet loss , separation or divorce, job change/ loss ), women's issues (pregnancy, hormones), as well as working on relationships with couples and families.
Life is full of challenges. I believe these challenges can also be stepping stones to our own personal growth. Whether stress from a job, a relationship issue or perhaps experiencing depression or anxiety, everyone deserves to have a non-judgmental, safe place to be able to talk. As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, I strive to make my office a comfortable environment where those "hard conversations" can happen, resulting in a deeper understanding of what roles we play in relationships as well as how our thoughts impact how we feel and act.

I work with people in life transitions, grief , anxiety, parenting, foster/adopt issues, trauma, job stress, relationship discord, infertility, post-partum issues and more.
I named my business Life Journey Counseling because I believe that we are all on a journey. We typically have ideas about where we are headed and how we will get there, but life often deals us something different...something we didn't plan for. How we handle that is the key to our own personal growth. I am inspired by the power of people to help themselves, but also a firm believer in the importance of having support and help when we need it. I help people through the therapeutic relationship we form to realize their full potential.

In the experience of divorce, death , living with our own or loved ones addictions we are continually asked to adapt to circumstances that are beyond our control.
In the past twenty seven years of practice, I've come to deeply understand that we become who we are from two sources: our relationships and experiences. The beliefs we hold about our limitations, potential, and life's possibilities spring from our interpretations (and misinterpretations) of life events and from the people surrounding them. I help clients unpack their past and present experiences so they may understand how these are woven together; to heal self-judgements and negative beliefs that come from their past; and create compassionate, loving, and empowered relationship with themselves, and others.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
