We can work together to untangle issues with codependency, people pleasing behaviors, chronic guilt, low self-worth, childhood emotional neglect, family role trauma, anxiety and depression rooted in relational stress, and adult relationship healing.
As a child, adults said to you: “Wow, you’re mature for your age!” Maybe you had to be. Growing up, you walked on eggshells to keep the peace. You stayed as small, quiet, and compliant as possible. You found yourself parenting your parent, navigating their difficult emotions, but you weren’t allowed to have any of your own. As an adult, you find yourself continuing to live in these patterns in your closest relationships. You say “yes” when you want to say “no”. You put everyone else’s needs ahead of your own and feel overburdened with managing other's emotions . You doubt your intuition and feel lonely, unseen, and misunderstood .

Are you stuck in the same arguments—where someone shuts down, the other escalates, and nothing actually changes? You can love each other deeply and still feel caught in painful patterns that leave you disconnected, resentful, or exhausted. If you’re tired of walking on eggshells, blowing up, or feeling like you’re losing yourself in the relationship, you’re not alone—and this can shift. I specialize in helping high-conflict hetero and lgbtq couples break out of power struggles and rebuild connection without losing themselves in the process. My work is direct, compassionate, and grounded in real change—not just insight.

As a Somatic Counselor, I work from an understanding of how our thoughts and emotions are necessarily intertwined with our body - internally with brain wiring and externally through behaviors that communicate when words do not. My focus is challenging emotional states and helping adults, partners, and families resolve what the resulting behaviors may be trying to communicate. Specifically, I work with anxiety/ptsd, depression, anger, health crises/fear of death or abandonment, low self-esteem, and grief. Together we choose methods that feel like a fit to meet your circumstance. Ultimately, the goal is empowerment.

Life is messy. Navigating life transitions, anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship challenges, grief, addiction, past trauma, or simply trying to hold everything together can leave you feeling disconnected from yourself or stuck in patterns you can’t seem to change. Maybe you understand why you feel the way you do—or maybe none of it makes sense yet. I believe people make sense in the context of their experiences. Therapy can help you understand how you got here, reconnect with yourself, and decide what you want to carry forward and what you’re ready to change.

The term "creative neurocounseling" describes my approach to therapy, which is founded in basic human connection, augmented by our understanding of the brain, and deepened by the practice of creative expression. Verbal language is a critical aspect of our lives, so much so that we can't imagine life without it. But our minds work far beyond the scope of conscious vocabulary - and we can harness that aspect in remarkable ways. My clients are often highly sensitive, highly intelligent folks who struggle with addictions, eating disorders, or other long-term consequences of developmental trauma.

“Here we go again.” The thought crosses your mind as once again you try to bring something up to your partner, you're met with defensiveness, they shut down and your anxiety spikes. It’s not that you haven’t tried to improve things, but more often than not rehashing the argument just adds to the growing pile of unresolved wounds pushing you apart. You long to feel safe and emotionally close to the one you love most, but you don’t want to keep triggering harmful cycles. You're exhausted and you want relief. I specialize in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) to help couples break negative cycles and create lasting change.

The problems and symptoms bringing you to seek therapy might be connected to things you wish never happened. This can be overwhelming to feel and vulnerable to invite another person to be with you. Deep down you may be hoping for change and eager for healing, but unsure of how to get it. I believe psychotherapy is a sacred process that can look underneath the surface and explore deeply-rooted issues to help create long lasting and significant change. My hope is to partner with you to help you understand yourself, deepen your relationships with others, and foster your healing journey.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
