5 years of specialty training, and have worked with individuals who have autism spectrum disorder or other neurodevelopmental disorders regularly since 2009.
I have come to believe that while each person is dealt a certain set of cards in life, we have choice in how to play them. Understanding the cards we are dealt can provide great relief. However, this understanding alone is often not enough for growth. A good therapist can serve as a mirror, allowing us to see ourselves from different angles and consider things about our thoughts, feelings and behaviors that we may have just reacted to in the past. Seeing ourselves in new ways allows us more choice; creating more helpful behaviors, reducing emotional strain and changing difficult relationships.

My clinical specialties include: Anxiety Management, Depression, Men's Issues, Autism Spectrum Disorder/ Asperger Syndrome/ Neurodiversity Issues, Life Transitions, Interpersonal/ Social difficulties, College Preparation and Adjustment, Substance Abuse/ Dependence, Low Self Esteem, Motivational Issues, and Relationship Difficulties.
I'm a clinical psychologist providing individual therapy for adults and adolescents. If you're here, then you're probably looking for a change. Life can be unpredictable, complicated, and demanding. Together we can determine what a change may look like for you and develop strategies for moving towards that change. I view therapy as a collaborative process -- a joint effort towards feeling more connected, satisfied, and adaptable. I work with professionals, students, artists, musicians, parents, and many other individuals.

Life is messy. People get stuck, or bruised or wounded. Or overwhelmed by changes they don't want or understand and aren't "handling." And sometimes speak or act in incredibly unhelpful ways. They hurt themselves, or the people they love and feel worse. Or get stuck in blaming and justifying their behavior. And things don't get better. Time alone isn't enough. If you've tried what you know to do, and it isn't helping, or you are "stuck", it's probably a good time to get some outside help.

I provide therapy and coaching for neurologically diverse adults and teens who may at times feel challenged, confused or exhausted by the social world. I enjoy helping clients to interpret the 'invisible' rules of social relationships, and to problem-solve practical challenges they may face at home, work, or school. I use EMDR therapy frequently for improving self-regulation, and for processing trauma or other past experiences that may be interfering with clients' daily life. I also provide consultation to parents and caregivers of individuals who are working on social cognition issues.

As a neurodivergent person, moving through a world built for neurotypical people can be an overwhelming and disempowering experience. When social pressure or trauma leads you to mask who you really are, it can lead to depression, anxiety, stress, and/or a sense of not inhabiting or controlling your own body. Sometimes, the more you try to fit in, the more alienated you become from yourself and those around you.

The mind is a good servant, but a bad master. Stop being blown around like a leaf on the wind by every thought, feeling, and memory that pops into your head. Mental events arise involuntarily, and the more you try to force them all into the mold of happiness, the more they seem to rebel, like trying to smooth out waves in water with your hands. However, just because you can’t control them directly does not mean that you have to be controlled by them. You can learn to stop touching the water and let the waves settle, and how to stop buying in to every mental event, even when negative ones do arise.

When is enough enough? Life is a constant process of managing work, family, friendships, partnerships, parenting, a household; the list never ends. Every year you might think it's going to be better, less stress, more fun; and then it's back to the same draining routines. If you feel tired of wishing things in your life were different and finding yourself stuck in patterns and relationships that don't feel good, something has to change. Starting now might feel like too much, but, we know there's never the "perfect" time and waiting will set you back another year. Everyone deserves to feel whole.

Do you and your partner suffer from communication problems? Did one of you have an affair and you are wondering if you can rebuild your relationship? Do you long for the days when you felt loved by your partner instead of lonely and in pain? Relationship stress takes a huge toll on your daily life. It can make it impossible to function at work, parent your kids and just get through your day. Studies show that a toxic relationship can even negatively impact your physical health. If any of these difficulties sound familiar, you are not alone. We all need to feel safe with our partner in order to be our best selves in relationship.

You can’t believe your questioning your sexual orientation at this point in your life. Muscles tense and heart pounds as you clear your search history to hide it from your spouse. Fear and shame catch in your throat and freeze your breath. “Do I really have to be doing this NOW?! Don’t most people figure this out in their teens?! This can’t be happening." You’ve tried to ignore it but the pent-up energy and longing in your body only grow stronger with each passing day. You're distracted at work and distant in your relationships. It may be time to face the truth, but you have no F-ing idea how to proceed.

I believe our relational experiences significantly impact our health and wellbeing, including the therapeutic relationship. When we feel less alone in our experiences of pain and distress, we can more easily connect to ourselves and others in a way that supports individual and collective health. Within a safe space, and through an attuned relationship with ourselves and others, we all have the power to tune into our instinct towards healing. I am passionate about walking beside my clients, undoing their aloneness, and have a strong sense of justice, advocating with passion for my clients.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
