My approach looks at people holistically concentrating on the interactions between thoughts, emotions, physical wellness, and spirituality. I do not have a cookie cutter approach and understand that life and individuals are complex. The relationship between therapist and client is the driving force for change; therefore my number one goal is to build a strong and supportive alliance. I use play therapy with children and expressive therapies (art and creative writing) with clients of all ages. I enjoy working in creative ways with clients when it is a good fit.

I work with the notion that people are naturally motivated to find meaning in their lives. As people search for meaning they may suffer emotionally, spiritually and psychologically and respond reactively rather than attentively. Counseling is a way to observe the reactive patterns in your life that are causing you to suffer. I will support you in discovering options to your life's challenges. I provide a place for you to observe and practice alternative ways of self-expression and I work with you towards solutions that will empower you to make the changes you want in your life. I enjoy working with couples and individuals.

I recently relocated from Austin, TX to Longmont. I began my clinical work at Austin Recovery, working with individuals facing addiction and the many issues underlying addictive behaviors. Supports offered during Lorna's 30 years of professional experience have included relationship tools; mindfulness/meditation instruction; teaching; speaking; & writing.
Navigating coupling, uncoupling, transitions and relationships can be challenging. We yearn for togetherness and separateness; closeness and space; intimacy and independence; trust/safety/security and spark/intrigue/desire. In relationships we ask: Can I be myself here? Is it possible to have it all? We fear in relationships we are either losing love or losing ourselves. Lorna is passionate about supporting couples and connection. She enjoys working individually with men, women and partners exploring attachment orientations, and leveraging the forces that foster a sense of safety alongside those that sustain long-term desire.

Healing happens in relationship .
Beginning therapy can be one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make, and I want you to know how much I honor the courage it takes to pursue a more connected, authentic life for yourself. I work with clients in pursuit of the insight and self-compassion necessary to identify needs and progress toward goals. So often, unconscious dynamics and inherited patterns of behavior dominate our lives. These processes usually exist beneath or outside of our conscious awareness. My role is to help you encounter the truth of your life, while embodying enough kindness to change.

My clients appreciate my straightforward approach in working with people of all ages in an open environment to help individuals, couples , and families.
We want to show the world that we have everything put together. Many times, we are struggling to stay afloat. Our quality of life is affected, and we find struggle in our relationships. Communication within ourselves and with others is compounded. Finding a non-judgmental and unbiased environment to process individually and/or together with partners and families can help to note the specific problem(s). By better understanding the problem, we are more successful in finding solutions. If we are informed, we are better in our decision-making. Therapy is a unique process, just like your life is unique.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
