"I have not met a more wholehearted counselor than Dr. Horowitz in 40 years of working with so many," wrote author Stephen Levine. Your courageous reach for help is the first, hardest step. I have been through a number of disasters, incl. 2 large fires, 1 earthquake, deaths & my sister's psych hospitalization, & that's helping me to help folks adjust to CVIDS-19. Whether you are suffering from anxiety, depression, anger, grief, or pain , you can be helped via research-based tools. We'll first revisit your positive attributes: your accomplishments, talents, & passions are fuel for growth & change. We humans can re-learn, thankfully.

Are you struggling with chronic anxious thoughts, low self-esteem, difficulty sleeping, or chronic pain syndromes? If you have been feeling stuck in physical or emotional pain , it is important to know that you are not alone in this, and that there is support available. I understand the interconnectedness of trauma, anxiety, and chronic pain . I know that these experiences can cause anger, resentment, and hopelessness, and hinder the joy and quality of life. However, they are temporary and treatable. I know this because I have been there myself.

I work with people who have chronic illness and chronic pain , and I can help you learn how your emotional, mental, and physical health are intertwined.
We follow many paths in life in a continuous flow, yet if we hit a log jam it can be impossible to move at all. Activities of daily life become stressful, relationships tense, work, too hard. Our inner critic quickly points out flaws, and we can begin to doubt our abilities. Anxiety and depression, stop us. Then illness or pain start to come, and pushing beyond our limits leads to emotional despair or “chronic” health issues. Eventually we wonder how we got here, and how or if, we can get back to our flow, yet we don’t know where to begin. If this is you, don’t give up, or give in.

My primary areas of focus are helping people heal from chronic pain and health conditions and working with transgender clients beyond the transition process. Most chronic pain is actually quite treatable but requires the correct understanding of pain and the right tools to work through it. In most cases, chronic pain is a case of your brain sending out a danger signal when your body is actually not in danger. When this is happening, we can teach your brain to stop sending out that danger signal.

If you've lost a loved one to suicide, you know: grief after suicide is unlike anything you've ever suffered before. It strips your world down to the bones. Your soul is hollowed out like an abandoned building. Light can barely get in. Few people can imagine what you're going through, or what you may need to survive and rediscover a life worth living. I get it. My own daughter, Beth, killed herself. It's why I do this work. If no one understands your pain - if your support network has failed you and people are pushing you to "get over it" and "move on", if you're struggling to function in daily life - let's talk. You are not alone.

My specializations include depression, anxiety, trauma, anger management, addiction, men's issues, aging and midlife, sleep and dreams, chronic pain , career, spirituality, and life's meaning and purpose.
I can help you transmute the immense power of your story into positive change in your life. Many psychological, emotional, and spiritual problems boil down to conflicts between our inner world (our goals, desires, loves, aversions, spiritual realizations) and our outer world (demands of family, relationships, career, money, social groups). It's natural to internalize the outer world and externalize the inner world, but that's also the source of many of our troubles. I offer careful, authoritative, compassionate guidance to help you sort this out and right the ship for a healthy, sane, awakened life.

People are often drawn to therapy when they are struggling and in pain , when they are in a time of transition, or when they feel themselves to be on the edge of growth. Often these areas overlap. I have been a practicing psychotherapist for decades and I continue to deeply appreciate the journey of healing and discovery that therapy can be. Where are you on your journey? What type of support and connection are you seeking? I make an effort to return calls within 24 hours. Please reach out if you need more information or would like to hear a human voice.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
