I offer a trauma-informed, attachment-based approach.
You might feel dissatisfied with your relationships, career, or direction in life. You might be confused about what you want, how to proceed from here, and where to get help. You've felt alone in your pain and possibly embarrassed about needing help. Maybe you are struggling with intimacy issues. Perhaps your problems are sexual. You desire to truly connect with your partner (or find a partner) but do not know how. You know you'd like to feel deeply satisfied in your body, heart, sex, and mind. You'd like to provide another this deep satisfaction.

I have been a mental health practitioner for over 25 years. I specialize in the treatment of trauma, anxiety, identity and attachment dynamics. In my experience a common thread observed is the individual's need to be understood, to be accepted as they are, experience long term meaningful connections and to live an authentic vibrant life. Too often we adopt a judgmental inner narrative that is riddled with shame. In therapy I will help you learn to explore yourself and your relationship with others through the eyes of compassion and curiosity.

In our work together, my intention is to hold a space in which you can begin to relate to yourself with a sense of curiosity and gentleness. This includes growing the capacity to be with your internal experience, as it is, without the need to numb or distract in ways that may have become destructive. I believe that the therapeutic relationship itself is integral to the healing that takes place in therapy. When we feel safe enough to trust and open up, then we can begin the work we need to do on ourselves.

Many of my clients come to therapy asking themselves: How can I stop worrying so much? How can I find hope again? How can I develop the relationships and connections I truly desire? How can I understand and manage big emotions and triggers? How can I get unstuck and move forward in the ways I want to in my life? How can I fill this big emptiness I feel and find joy again?

I know no better medicine than to help each other feel seen, accepted, and made to feel safe. Humans are pack creatures, that tend to do better in pairs and groups. However our skills to authentically and securely attach have become illusive in today's world. Through building real connection with your therapist, you can find real insight, real healing, and true growth. I also work in the CDOC (in prison) with violent offenders, and those with serous criminal history. I think you'll find there's no issue I'm not equipped to deal with. Been practicing for 15 years, and I've helped all walks of people.

Currently accepting couples cases only. Hi! I'm Ely Reisen, Owner and Therapist at Connection Centered Counseling, PLLC. In my practice, I view the concerns and needs brought to therapy as the result of interacting and moving variables within one’s life. I also believe that when people have supportive relationships in their lives, when they know how to ask for what they need in healthy ways, when they know how to set important boundaries, and when they are empowered toward the accomplishment of deeply personal goals, many of the concerns and complaints that bring people to counseling resolve.

My passion is supporting parents who have experienced difficult births. Bringing another life into this world is an important and challenging experience. Whether you are the individual who gave birth or a witness, there can be immediate and/or lasting waves of physical and emotional difficulties that may effect your life. These paths are unique to each of us because every birth is important and impactful. My work is to listen and journey with you as you explore your birth story and the impacts it has had on your life. Although this is an area of focus, I work with adolescents and adults needing support in other areas of life.

I approach therapy with warmth, curiosity, and commitment to your mental health journey. This includes a holistic and person-centered approach that explores bodily consciousness, emotional processing, belief systems, social supports, cultural upbringing, and past trauma. You can also expect to develop practical tools for managing stress and building resilience as well. Above all, therapy should leave you feeling empowered, capable, and heard. My goal is to foster a safe environment where you feel free to open up without fear of judgement and the accountability to progress towards your goals, both within and beyond our sessions.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
