Most people, at one time or another, need the help of a therapist. It can be one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Perhaps you are struggling with anxiety, past trauma, depression, anger, phobias, grief or are having difficulty in relationships. We often are responding to life and the people around us with outdated maladaptive coping strategies. I will help you develop self awareness and emotional regulation skills so that instead of being hijacked by your emotions you are empowered to react in healthy, positive ways. I provide my clients with a tool box of techniques that they can use to support them between our sessions.

Life can be challenging and there are circumstances for many of us where we need assistance to navigate the difficulties we find ourselves facing with a professional. At times the healthiest choice is to ask for help. Counseling people through their personal challenges is a calling and passion for me. I have practiced psychotherapy for 24 years and have worked regularly with life transitions, addictions, acute and complex trauma, depression, anxiety, anger, stress, eating disorders, family issues, loss and grief. Contact me and let's see if working together would be a fit. I offer a 30-minute free consultation with no obligation.

There are several areas with which I have experience: anxiety & panic, depression, struggling to regulate emotions (anger outbursts, overthinking, paranoia, impulsivity), navigating relationships (romantic and platonic), complex trauma (sexual, physical, job related, childhood, relational), military/firefighters/police, staying sober, & more.
Reaching out for help is daunting. Not knowing if you’re going to find someone who fits what you need. Not knowing what the therapy process is like. Not knowing what to say or do. Not knowing how long this journey will take. I get it. It can be overwhelming and takes a lot just to make a phone call. But rest assured that I am here to help guide you through the process, help you get through the pain, and out on the other side.

My specializations include depression, anxiety, trauma, anger management, addiction, men's issues, aging and midlife, sleep and dreams, chronic pain, career, spirituality, and life's meaning and purpose.
I can help you transmute the immense power of your story into positive change in your life. Many psychological, emotional, and spiritual problems boil down to conflicts between our inner world (our goals, desires, loves, aversions, spiritual realizations) and our outer world (demands of family, relationships, career, money, social groups). It's natural to internalize the outer world and externalize the inner world, but that's also the source of many of our troubles. I offer careful, authoritative, compassionate guidance to help you sort this out and right the ship for a healthy, sane, awakened life.

"I have not met a more wholehearted counselor than Dr. Horowitz in 40 years of working with so many," wrote author Stephen Levine. Your courageous reach for help is the first, hardest step. I have been through a number of disasters, incl. 2 large fires, 1 earthquake, deaths & my sister's psych hospitalization, & that's helping me to help folks adjust to CVIDS-19. Whether you are suffering from anxiety, depression, anger, grief, or pain, you can be helped via research-based tools. We'll first revisit your positive attributes: your accomplishments, talents, & passions are fuel for growth & change. We humans can re-learn, thankfully.

All of us have been hurt and humiliated, and some of us have suffered real trauma, neglect or abuse. We try to bury these experiences, and in order to live we develop ways to protect ourselves that typically involve blame, withdrawal, anger, drugs, manipulation and more. The therapeutic answer involves first resolving thoughts, feelings and behaviors born of actual or perceived past experiences, and secondly discovering an inner core of strength. Psychotherapy facilitates a sense of greater confidence and compassion, and fosters new awareness of connection and belonging. My interest and skill is in being useful to you in this process.

I love working with couples! A flourishing relationship gives us access to a more fulfilled life. When we feel seen, understood and supported...we thrive! In couples work, we better our skills in communication, vulnerability and emotional regulation...the result: more empathy, patience, forgiveness, tolerance and resiliency during painful anger, conflict and difference. It is my sole purpose to help individuals cultivate meaningful connection and trust within themselves and their partners. Don't let old stories and stuck behavior keep you from learning, expanding and healing. I do believe in hope and transformation!

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
