We all have our own stories, narratives, truths. Each story and truth is experienced through a unique lens, informing how we think, feel, and behave. But some stories are unhelpful or untrue. Therapy is about exploring and understanding how the fabric of your life is woven and can be potentially rewoven to best represent your truest self.

We have a saying in our family, "break the cycle." In a nutshell, this describes the challenge we all face in our day-to-day lives in dealing with our past and how we learned to communicate and interact with the people around us. I believe that people strive to be the best they can be, and it's not always easy to find the path to that place. I want to help you "break the cycle." Please call me at 303-895-9622 so we can determine if we would be a fit for counseling.

This is a difficult time to be a human, living in a current culture where the right to safely exist and flourish is being threatened daily. Here you are, navigating all of that and living your own complex life. Unhealthy or complicated relationships. Experiences of trauma. Life transitions. Parenting in a time of chaos. The trip that is middle age. Our coping strategies that may have worked in the past may no longer feel like they are working during this time. We may feel like we are losing contact with ourselves and others, feeling disconnected from experiencing connection or joy.

It may look like you have it together on the outside — but internally feel exhausted, anxious, stuck, or disconnected. Many of the clients I work with are high-functioning and self-aware. They can articulate their values and goals. But when it comes to actually changing patterns, they feel blocked. Some have experienced obvious trauma, where others grew up learning to minimize their needs, stay strong, or take on more than was theirs to carry. Over time, those patterns can turn into anxiety, self-criticism, shame, or difficulty knowing who you are. In therapy, we focus on closing the gap between insight and action

I see my role as someone who is focused on treating how we relate to ourselves, to others, to the world. Therapy with me isn’t about solving every puzzle or having the right answer. It’s about exploring together. I strive to create a sense of safety, security, and sanity. It won't always be comfortable, but I want to encourage my clients to face the things that make them uncomfortable honestly. That’s where growth happens, not by avoiding what is hard, but by moving through it.

Domestic Abuse Therapists
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
