We now know that adoption itself is not the end of the story.
Being a teen or a young adult today is hard! It is easy to lose sight of who you are and who you want to be. Teens and young adults who have been adopted can feel confused, frightened, alone, and “different” than their non-adopted friends and peers. Some common questions might be, what is going on with me? Why do I feel this way? Where is this pain and confusion coming from? Being a parent to a teenager or young adult can be pretty rough too! How do I help my emerging adult find their way and navigate life with confidence? Becoming your best self can be a rocky road…and adoption adds its own obstacles. I am here to help.

As a long time therapist, I know that it usually takes a lot of courage to reach out for help & it can feel so vulnerable to take this first step. I honor this stepping out of your comfort zone into the unfamiliar, so I create felt safety & a close therapeutic connection from the get go. I bring compassion into all my sessions, valuing the client's pace and sense of security as highly as I value my knowledge and experience. It is my belief that it is only in this balance that therapeutic healing can occur.

Do you ever feel like you're running on empty and at a loss for what to do next? You might know you want life to look different, but you're not sure how to get there. Maybe it's your teen who's struggling with depression, anger, or behaviors; your kiddo who can't help but throw fits at the drop of a hat, or can't seem to calm down; or maybe it's you who's struggling with past trauma, overwhelming anxiety, or uncertainty with your relationships. No matter the struggle, you don't have to deal with it alone. I love what I do and I'm here to help. We are currently offering in-person and teletherapy sessions.

I view the counseling process as forming a trusting relationship with you to explore the nature of who you are, why you are, & the nature of the problems you face. I use an eclectic approach including a variety of counseling theories to meet individual needs. I believe there is purpose in behavior which is shaped by positive, negative, and traumatic experiences. Throughout the counseling process we will explore how negative thoughts & experiences have reinforced the perception of oneself & worldview, and how to replace negative thinking patterns/behaviors to increase self-worth leading to fulfilling relationships and connections.

If you are struggling and feel helpless in knowing how to best support your child, there is hope. Whatever your situation--whether your child has anxiety, recurring outbursts, or he/she is exhibiting physical symptoms like an upset stomach or bed wetting--I can help by creating a welcoming space for your child to communicate via play therapy. Play is the language of children and by using research informed methods & building authentic relationships, I can help your child (and you) learn to regulate through challenging emotions, process painful experiences, and learn new ways of relating and becoming his/her authentic self.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
