For as long back as I can remember, I have believed in the power and importance of relationships. Relationships are at the heart of who we are, how we grow, and who we become. In our early years, our closest relationships teach us how to be with others and influence how we see the world. Although we may learn one way to be in relationship when we are a child, our attachment style can also be changed through our current relationships no matter what our age, which can then allow us to choose with intention how we parent, support, and relate to our children.

As a play therapist and family therapist, I believe that healing is a family affair, and, I include parents as an integral part of their child's therapy. I specialize in trauma, attachment, adoption, blended families, difficult and severe behaviors, as well as parenting, and issues stemming from any and all of the above. I love working with children and their parents and families. Children seem to have an innate sense of what is going on and what needs to happen in order for healing to occur, and, when they are able to express that and be heard, the whole family can shift and change.

You try to sleep, but your thoughts spin through a million anxious interactions from your day. You ruminate over horrible scenarios, real and imagined, with a sense of doom hanging over your head. You find yourself scrolling on your phone, losing time, and not feeling any better, and often times, even worse. You look at the clock and already dread the next day, knowing you’ll be starting off completely exhausted. You pummel yourself with criticism and wonder why life seems so much harder for you than everyone else. If your life sounds something like this, let's talk.

Let’s try something different…Perhaps you’ve talked through things with a friend and, cognitively, you understand it thanks to talk therapy, you’ve meditated, journaled, tried breathing through it, you’ve done all the self-care things that help in the moment, but then a few weeks later, the same feeling is back. Same trigger, same reaction, same exhausted version of you wondering why nothing actually sticks. Here’s the thing, emotions aren’t just thoughts. They’re physical. They live in your body, your nervous system. And until you can process and move them through your body, you’re not releasing anything. You’re just describing it.

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming — especially for teens, and adults who may not know what to expect.
In my practice, I integrate animal-assisted therapy, which means you're not doing this alone. I use evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and elements of play to meet clients where they are — emotionally, developmentally, and personally. The presence of a therapy dog can help ease anxiety and build trust.

I see my role as someone who is focused on treating how we relate to ourselves, to others, to the world. Therapy with me isn’t about solving every puzzle or having the right answer. It’s about exploring together. I strive to create a sense of safety, security, and sanity. It won't always be comfortable, but I want to encourage my clients to face the things that make them uncomfortable honestly. That’s where growth happens, not by avoiding what is hard, but by moving through it.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
