Change is not linear. I have come to understand the numerous challenges in life that can make you feel as if you have gone nowhere. The anxiety that sets in is alarming and the depression that may later consume you feels debilitating. However, I have also come to understand the impact that we have on our own suffering: how we often jump to "I can't" instead of "I can try." We have all found ourselves deep in self-doubt, feeling stuck in the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Are you looking for a chance to see how change and success can become more linear overtime? My approach can help you get there.

Other important goals include honoring the cultural values and spiritual beliefs of my clients. I love the challenge of helping my clients discover how they have become entangled in self-sabotaging behaviors that have led to their distress and loneliness and then helping them explore options that will result in their achieving greater happiness, self-confidence and sense of personal power.

I practice person-centered therapy, which means that I aim to create a therapeutic environment of empathy, acceptance, and authenticity. During sessions, I give suggestions about techniques to try and skills to practice, but I believe my clients are the experts on their lives and what works best for them. My goal is to empower my clients to determine how they want to move forward rather than telling them what to do. I strive not to judge my clients for their actions; instead, I help them uncover the underlying thoughts and motivations behind their behaviors.

Adults I work with often find they are an expert in taking care of everyone around them but feel uncertain how to take care of themselves. They may be "people pleasers" and know in great detail what others may need and how to fix things, but struggle to know what they need, how they feel or how to address their own problems. This often leads to feelings of anger, resentment, exhaustion, self-harming thoughts and neglect of their own needs, with an increase in anxiety, depression, or grief. They may also have experienced trauma and can benefit from the healing process of EMDR.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
