When struggling with stress or anxiety small tasks can feel like mountains. Activities that used to bring joy now feel like chores. During tough times like these it is crucial to have a strong support system, people that care about your well-being and want to see you reach your goals. Therapy can be a powerful addition to that support system. It provides a safe space for conversations to flow, in turn promoting validation, skill-building, goal-realization, and emotional-processing. Therapy has the ability to open the door for countless interpersonal and intrapersonal growth opportunities.

It is vulnerable looking for a therapist. This is especially true when your life is constantly changing and you are being overwhelmed by both the choices and expectations you have for the future. It is common in life to become stuck. You know you are stuck when you feel like you never meet the expectations you have for yourself, are deeply burdened by the fear of making the wrong decision in life, and are exhausted by the roles others expect you to play. Your change starts when you recognize that the work of growth is more rewarding than the pain of maintaining your status quo.

Much of our current suffering originates from the storytellers and systems in our lives that have taught us who we are to be. The beliefs about ourselves we internalize in response to this messaging may no longer serve us. Learning to sift through these voices and find and honor our own remains the task and gift of a lifetime. My therapeutic approach remains warm, open, and non-judgmental. My approach is psychodynamic: in our work together, I am attentive to the ways relationships in your life have shaped, harmed, and healed you.

I practice person-centered therapy, which means that I aim to create a therapeutic environment of empathy, acceptance, and authenticity. During sessions, I give suggestions about techniques to try and skills to practice, but I believe my clients are the experts on their lives and what works best for them. My goal is to empower my clients to determine how they want to move forward rather than telling them what to do. I strive not to judge my clients for their actions; instead, I help them uncover the underlying thoughts and motivations behind their behaviors.

How long does OCD treatment take?
OCD is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
