I have been leading, coaching and mentoring in the corporate world for 10 plus years, and private practice coaching for over 5 years. Over the years of working primarily with men I realized that we often struggle to communicate well. When faced with confrontation, we defend ourselves or attack, or simply walk away. In some stressful situations we may choke up and struggle to get our words out. Why have we lost the ability to dialog and understand another point of view without feeling threatened? In helping men find their voice, I first had to discover mine.

Therapy can provide life-changing benefits for anyone, and doesn't mean that someone is “ill” or that anything is “wrong”. Feelings of sadness and worry are natural, and therapy can help us overcome difficult circumstances and learn skills that can assist us throughout the rest of our lives. I understand and respect the strength it takes to begin challenging roadblocks in our lives, and I am here to help you every step of the way.

Let's be honest. When it comes to overcoming your compulsive use of porn and/or sex you feel defeated. You're tired of hearing that more effort and more accountability is the answer. What you're doing isn't working. Right? I get it. For over twenty years I was held captive by a secret porn and sex addiction. I understand the crushing shame and guilt. I understand that feeling that "things will never really change." But you know what? I found lasting freedom. And you can too.

"Hot mess." A funny little phrase that some use to humorously describe their struggles. Have you ever described your situation with this phrase, but it's not funny anymore? You just can't seem to get your life together and fear that maybe you will never be able to gain control. Your sense of humor has been replaced by anxiety, sadness, anger, and aggravation. Sometimes you explode, causing more problems or harming people you care about. It's not like you woke up one day thinking "I'm going to make a mess out of my life," but somehow, that is exactly what has happened.

As a therapist, I genuinely enjoy sitting with people and listening to their life experiences. I believe we all have a story, and I am honored when people choose to share their stories with me. I often tell people that “I may not have many answers to life's big questions; however, I have a pair of ears that will listen.” And that is my promise to you – to listen – without judgment, and with an earnest desire to journey with you through your continued self-discovery and healing process.

Men often experience their mental health in ways that are unique to them, commonly influenced by societal and cultural expectations. For this reason, men in therapy benefit most when working with a therapist who truly understands the challenges facing men in today’s world. As a male therapist, my practice is tailored towards supporting men through relationship issues and trauma, as well as career, stress and other personal struggles. My goal as a therapist is to help men to find their true potential in living happy and successful lives.

(Scheduling in-person and Zoom now) Sometimes we experience disturbing levels of anxiety, depression, anger, or loss. Sometimes we feel disconnected or not able to get a handle on things. In those times emotions can be overwhelming or confusing, and our usual ways of dealing with life don't seem to work anymore. Therapy offers a way to increase awareness of who we are, measure our limits, and expand our personal and interpersonal abilities to make significant changes. I believe we have within us the potential for a healthy and creative life. In the therapy process, we have an opportunity to discover and unleash that potential.

Are you overwhelmed by disturbing intrusive thoughts that seem too terrible to talk about? Do you ever feel powerless to stop looking at pornography? Or are you a man grappling with how to live more authentically in an increasingly complex world? If you identify with any of these struggles, please know that you are not alone and that you can find your way to greater well-being. Opening up about things that you might feel ashamed of or distressed by can be scary, but I believe these struggles deserve to be understood with deep compassion and that facing them head-on is the way forward.

There are times in life when one needs backup. Do not "go-it-alone" when it comes to life's challenges, but let me assist you on your path. The only constant in life is change and they come with personal, relational, and professional adjustments. Navigating the changes can be smoother with a trained professional behind you. We all have blind spots, even in the things we are best at doing. So trained perspective can help us discover them and tap into our inner wisdom to make our own decisions.

For me, the ideal client comes motivated and seeking change in their life. The focus is on the client and what they would like to change. It could be relationship issues communication, self-esteem/self-confidence, or a variety of other issues, as long as they are willing to change things. I think most clients may come in with a misunderstanding that we are responsible for their change, in actuality it is they who use the tools given. The client should be allowed to establish their own goals, big or small. The client is usually in a need of support, listening, and understanding. Change is powerful and up to the client.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
