I work with all types of couples with all types of struggles, including those wherein an eating disorder is present.
Hey there, I'm Anna. Have your fights with your partner become predictable, and you start thinking, "here we go again"? Are you feeling disconnected, misunderstood, anxious, overwhelmed, unheard, unseen, or like you can't live up to your partner's expectations? I help couples dig underneath the surface to understand and express those underlying feelings and core needs to one another, in a way that feels safe. I also offer individual work in areas such as anxiety, perfectionism, relational issues, life transitions, and boundary setting.

She has experience working at the inpatient and residential level of care for the treatment of eating disorders.
It is normal during the course of our lives to feel stuck. You may have tried several options to getting unstuck, but find that there is a part of you that doesn't seem to budge. That part might hold trauma, unmet relational needs, anxiety, depression, low self esteem, the list goes on. Therapy is a great option to get to know the different parts of ourselves and learn how to care for these parts. Desiree offers a safe and nurturing space to take a deep dive into understanding you as a whole person; while also offering the tools and resources to process and heal the parts that feel stuck.

I have over 10 years of experience as a licensed therapist, including 9 years working with eating disorders in higher levels of care.
You will find me to be an authentic & direct therapist that will focus on your values & strengths to guide the therapy process. My philosophy is that therapy is the space to get into how & why what you’re trying to do differently isn't working, (because you probably already have enough people willing to tell you) what you should be doing with your life. I won’t promise that therapy will make the hard stuff in your life go away, but what I know it can do is help you find a way through the hard stuff with meaning & help build resilience.

I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, PTSD, and OCD and have experience working with anxiety, depression, relationship conflicts, gender dysphoria, self-harm, and chronic pain & illness.
Psychotherapy can provide an invaluable space to explore our fears and suffering with a compassionate witness. Over time, we are able to befriend aspects of ourselves that we have suppressed and begin to recognize that our symptoms are coping skills we have used to survive. I seek to provide gentle guidance to clients to help them move into discomfort, expand their insight, and discover previously untapped strength and resources, while also respecting each person’s unique process and pacing. I have a holistic approach, taking into consideration the mind, body, and spirit as integral to healing.

Women's issues, trauma, sexual abuse, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and religious cult abuse and damage are areas that I aim to keep the scope of my practice.
My aim is to provide a safe environment in which the client feels their stories are valued, heard, and honored. I have a profound respect for the human experience and all that it encompasses, including, but not exclusively pain and trauma to the core of the essence of a person. Vulnerability is a privilege, and a privileged right. I aim to hold a container in the therapeutic room in which this privilege of vulnerability may be fostered.

I am an individual therapist and have worked with adults with dual-diagnosis, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and relationship concerns.
Are you feeling stuck? Or perhaps anxiety, fear, other emotions, or memories are preventing you from being your true self? Asking for help can feel intimidating, and at the same time everyone needs help at some point in their life. I am glad you are starting this process. I am here to work together with you on your concerns, issues, or perhaps the much needed space of a listening ear. I find it can be difficult to vocalize our emotions, share our story, or be our true selves due to many underlying emotions.

Eating Disorders Therapists
What happens in therapy for eating disorders?
In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?
Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?
The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?
Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?
Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
