I specialize in military psychology, PTSD, depression, anxiety, transitions in life (e.g., a new medical diagnosis, perinatal and postpartum health, grief and loss, retirement), and adjustments in living with chronic health conditions (e.g., chronic pain, tinnitus, Parkinson’s disease).
Asking for help can be incredibly difficult. There may be times when we don’t feel like ourselves or are not living how we want to be. Other times we simply feel stuck. My approach to therapy is to join you on exploring if life was better, what would be different. If you’re not sure what that may be, that’s OK too. I take a collaborative, person-centered approach throughout the therapeutic process. This means not having to voyage alone toward what those changes in perspective and actions may be, to feel more congruent to who you are and your values in life.

Whether you are stressed, anxious, sleep-deprived, in pain, or "all of the above", we will work together as a team to name your goals for treatment, create a plan for addressing them, and then begin our journey of therapy, biofeedback or both.
You can't see it, but you can definitely feel it - the chest tightness, racing heartbeat, upset stomach, sweaty hands - the telltale signs of stress and anxiety are so uncomfortable and overwhelming! If only you could measure and see how stressed you were, then you could figure out what to do and how to better manage it. And maybe you could start sleeping well again too. Or maybe you're losing sleep over a really difficult relationship with a partner, parent, child, or even a friend, and you just need to sort through it with someone who isn't any of those people. I am here to help you with all of these issues.

Living with chronic pain can change how you move through the world—physically, emotionally, and mentally.
My lived experience with chronic pain informs my work, but it does not define it. I can deeply understand the frustration of navigating medical systems, the grief that can come with changes to your body or abilities, and the toll of pain that doesn’t simply “go away.” My approach is grounded in the belief that relief and meaningful change are possible.

Change is hard for most of us, especially when dealing with transitions (think birth, death, relationships, jobs, moving, illness, coming out, etc).
I obtained my MSW in 1997 and became a licensed clinical social worker in 1999. During COVID I went back to school becoming a certified life coach. I have provided counseling for over 25 years. I work with adults in all areas of life. Most recently, common challenges for my clients have included end of life, caregiving, coming out, and relationship changes.

Adults I work with often find they are experts in taking care of everyone around them but feel uncertain how to take care of themselves. They may be "people pleasers" and know, in great detail, what others may need and how to fix things, but struggle to know what they themselves need, how they feel or how to address their own problems.  They may have had traumatic or adverse experiences that impact the way they react and cope in many situations. This often leads to feelings of anger, resentment, exhaustion and neglect of their own needs, with an increase in anxiety, depression, stress, burnout or grief taking over.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
