Life is challenging, and being a child or adolescent seems to intensify and add to the challenges of life.
Hi name is Justien, she/her/hers, and I am the owner of Soothing Sands Therapy, LLC. I specialize in working with children, adolescents and young adults. I am fascinated with how the brain works finding ways to make the growth process go as smoothly as possible. It is because of my interest in brain development that I have found alternative ways to do therapy other than talking. When we think about adolescent and adolescent years, we just want to survive it but my passion is to help others not only get through it, but thrive through those years. I am also available to provide supervision to individuals in candidacy.

The quality I most desire in clients is authenticity. I view the therapeutic relationship as being based upon mutual trust, and it is difficult to enact meaningful change if we fail to present our genuine selves. However, I also acknowledge that we all have different experiences, and there is no need to be concerned if it takes varying amounts of time to build trust in the therapeutic relationship. I have experience working with the following: nearly all mood disorders and personality disorders, substance dependency, dual diagnosis, trauma, adolescent crime, couples counseling, family counseling.

I also have a large number of teen clients, as well as Law Enforcement and US Military personnel.
I do virtual therapy with clients here in Colorado. Most of my clients are seeking assistance in mitigating the stressors in their lives. Family relationships; grief/loss; difficulties with parenting or accepting parenting; substance use; crises of faith...all these issues are present in my practice. Most are looking for direction; someone to help sort through the problem and achieve resolution. They are distressed that they are at odds with family; concerned over the loss of control with substances; and some are wondering about their purpose in the world. These are the people with whom I enjoy working.

My practice is limited to assessment and evaluation, primarily with clients involved in the legal system for some reason. Adolescent age youth and adults are the specialty age groups, in part because adolescents and young adults tend to be involved with the legal system in criminal matters more frequently. My background includes clinical work with adolescents in the Denver Metro area and throughout Colorado. It also includes administrative and clinical work with forensically involved adults. Parents facing termination of parental rights and parents disputing custody structure make up the remainder of my focus and experience.

Families are facing so many challenges, and taking that step to seek outside help is vital and brave. Before looking for a therapist, you've likely striven to help your child or teen in other ways at home and school. My primary role as your child's therapist is to collaborate with you and your child/ teen to clearly identify strengths and struggles, and come up with a game plan to build connection, confidence, and stability. I utilize cognitive-behavioral, DBT, and trauma-focused approaches that are proven to reduce depression, anxiety, emotion dysregulation, and interpersonal conflicts.

You’ve been trying your hardest in relationships but still feel the pain of aloneness, feeling unheard, or not finding lasting connection/s. Or, you find yourself stuck, not able to approach life with forward-moving energy or clear direction. I get it. Trauma, developmental trauma, and life's disappointments can create barriers to feeling solid within yourself & to attaining what you hope for in life. I use mind-body approaches that go beyond talk therapy to create lasting change. Together, we can identify & mend what is getting in the way of you having safe, authentic relationships or crafting a life that is more of what you want.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
