I am passionate about helping adults who are struggling with the
anxiety
, burnout, and existential questions that arise with life transitions.
Throughout the twists and turns of life, you may look around and wonder, “How did I end up here?” Maybe you feel clueless about where to go next. Maybe you feel too burnt out to take another step. Or maybe you’ve reached all your goals and feel like something is still missing. I know what it’s like to navigate major, sudden, or unforeseen life transitions—to start over in an unfamiliar place, to cope with the loss of “what could have been,” or to question your belief system, your choices, or your very self. Though the path you take in life may be unique, that does not mean you’re on your own.

Yes I am taking new clients, and will return calls/emails within 1 business day! Are you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or out of control? Struggling on any level is painful and leaves us feeling isolated and without support or knowing how to deal. The combination of life’s stresses with ineffective coping creates
anxiety
, depression, negative thought patterns, and overall unhappiness – a downward spiral that can impact any of us. Therapy is a great way to break old cycles and introduce new perspectives and tools to engage in life in a healthy and positive way.

We specialize in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for those seeking adult counseling, teen counseling, family counseling,
anxiety
/depression counseling, trauma counseling, college student therapy, personality disorder, and more.
I began Furst in Counseling PC after working with children, teens, and adults on the mission field in Mexico and Haiti. I like others had young adults I knew struggling to hang on and wanted to know how to better help. I could not simply stand by and watch the people I cared about hurt themselves or be hurt. Hence graduate school and my business being born. Within a safe space, I provide my clients my patience, support, respect, privacy, and undivided attention. No matter the goals of each client, I ensure my skills and experience will help improve and suit the needs and desires of the lifestyle they hope to achieve.

Life is sometimes stressful, confusing, and painful, presenting us with unique challenges to overcome. I help clients with clinical and practical interventions to work on goals such as regaining confidence, getting unstuck, stopping drinking, and improving relationships. According to Jon Kabat -Zinn, a mindfulness-based stress expert, "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." Embracing and practicing acceptance of pain leads to a decrease in human suffering. I provide therapy for individuals struggling with ADHD, self-esteem,
anxiety
, depression, trauma, and substance and behavioral addictions.

Depression,
anxiety
, burn out, relationship struggles. Believe it or not all can be related to trauma, stress, and difficult situations from the past. It's not always logical it's just the way our body system works sometimes. Some people know exactly why and how they struggle today, some do not. Either way, we work toward feeling less overwhelmed so that you have more control over your responses to emotions. We process memories from the past so that you can be effective now and moving forward. If therapy feels weird that's okay, sometimes it is, but maybe it's okay that it is weird if it can make your life more manageable.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
